I,m wanting to build a 500AR but I was wondering about taking it thru Canada . I,ll be crossing @ Beaver Creek~Haines or Bennet/Skagway . is there an deetructive device laws or anything that would create a problem . It will be my rambling , have with me all the time rifle so I don,t want to build it then have a problem .
.
. Thanks all.

Nobody's responded, so I'll take a crack at it.

There's no specific restriction on calibers, except in some handguns (.25 and 32), but you wouldn't be able to wander around with a handgun anyway.

There is the standard abject political fear of "black" guns, so as long as your rifle isn't one of those which are "restricted", you should be fine.

Best bet is to inquire with the Canadian Firearms Centre: http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/

Thanks Bwana . I followed the link and did a bunch of reading . found lots of stuff about mags but no caliber restrictions . Thats great . With the rifle only holding 2 down it sure can,t be called High capacity . . If anyone hears of any caliber restrictions I would preciate a heads up . I,ll do more reading on that website ..

What's a 500AR??

If it's built on an AR platform like the 50 Beowulf, you may have problems as any AR derivative is a restricted firearm in Canada, classified the same as a handgun.

If it's a bolt action sniper type rifle, you should be fine.

The AR series of rounds were developed by Jeffoso . . They fit in standard length bolt actions . like the Ruger M77mkII . Wich is what mine will be built on . Probobly go with a 19"barrel . was going with 18 then 18.5 . But 19 will give better room for the muzzle brake and eliminate any border problems . It is based on the 416 Rigby case shortened to 2.5" . It shoots a .510" dia bullet . 535 gr bullet should do 2250 fps and the 570 gr , 2100 fps . a skiff gun bear rifle .

Nice! You should have no problems crossing with that set-up.

I spend a bunch of time @ the Big Bore forum and have studied the AR line of cartridges alot for years . . The 416, 458 and 470 AR ( Accurate Reloading ) are based on the RUM case shortened to 2.5 " .The 500 on the Rigby case .
As my standard go to rifle has been my 458 Win mag on the ss Ruger 77 action . I had it built in 1995 . To the best of my knowledge it was the first one in Alaska . Possibly the first anywhere on that action .
With the mz brake on , the barrel is 22" .
the first 3 AR rounds didn,t give enough of a power jump with a short barrel imo to justify building them .
The 500 on the other hand will give me 6000 ft.lbs . from an 18" barrel . on a stainless Ruger action . I just really prefer stainless Ruger bolt actions .
