I understand that there is such a thing as a passport card for Americans visiting Canada.....One don't actually need a full book passport.....can anyone comment on this?
Thanks

The Canadian Federal Govt. tried to convince the American side to allow such a card to facilitate travel of both countries citizens both ways across the borders. Sadly the American Govt. rejected the idea. You might as well get a passport it only takes about three days to get it done.

and Barry vastly increased the cost too! Generally speaking all the problem/issues in hunting Canada are a result of the US Govt!

Strange it takes that long, I can only comment on getting a Canadian passport. I went in on a monday and picked it up on wednesday if I remember correctly. On our side there is an "expediated" process that costs more and is faster...maybe you guys have something like that too.

I fear this thread will become a sh**t slinging match soon of US vs Canada retoric. Where's Dewey???

Edit!! I talked to the wife and she says I'm getting old and can't remember times and dates anymore. Apparently it took about two weeks for my passport to get done. It was the UK work visa that only took a couple of days. Sorry to mislead anyone.

Here in Michigan we can get a Enhanced Drivers License for border crossing. $45 the fist time $38 every four years.
New York, Vermont and Washington also have them.

Very little hassle getting a passport and once you have it, you can go anywhere. No reason to bitch about it. Big Grin

Coyote wacker: Will the enhanced Mi license allow you to cross over to Canada from all bordering states or are you restricted to just the crossings in Michigan?

vapodog,

Yes, there is a passport card and it is cheaper than a passport. You can not use the card to "fly" into other countries other than Canada, but it will get you into the US. The Canadian's don't care if you have a passport or not. Just ID and birth certificate with suffice, it is the American's that require the "American" to re-enter their own country!

When I obtained my first passport last summer, I also got the passport card for trips to Canada. I think it was around $15 additional.

Northway has it right, you can go to Canada without a passport, you just can't come back to the US. I lived the first 25 years of my life within 6 miles of the border, when a new history teacher from Colorado asked our junior world geography class if anyone had ever visited a foreign country nobody raised their hand, he said he was suprised none of us had ever been to Canada- well everybody said they had been to Canada, but you asked about a foreign country. We used to drive up to the border station, wave at the officer and keep on driving on both sides of the border. However; it is no longer an "open" border.

The last time I crossed into Canada was in the fall of 2002 on the way back to Alaska. It took a little while to clear, nothing to unusual. It guess its more painful now. It should be, its the times I guess. I for one would rather put up with catching the creeps thru good Intel than making the Border Between the U.S. and Canada such a hassle to cross. Just a valid drivers lic and Insurance card. I would put more weigh on the Insurance card with that you have your policy number and you can do a real quick check with a click of a mouse. I never considered Canada to be a Foreign Country, Just the neighbors in the house next door.

Would a military ID suffice in lieu of a passport?

If I use my passport to enter Canada but I sneek back into the USA does that make me an illegal alien? Will I get free healthcare, free housing, resident student rates at all the colleges, and will my son get free breakfasts and lunches at his grade school?

Kevin, (22WRF) is ALWAYS WELCOME in my country and I hope he makes it to BC and I can buy him lunch. I have had several excellent business dealings with him and can say that he is a gentleman of the utmost probity and courtesy.

There are others, whom I would prefer to stay out of Canada, as I dislike ill-mannered louts and jerkoffs who harass others on AR.
