Moose and bison

Hi all

Well, now I know I can not go on a self guided hunt. Ok.

But, still I will go for a large moose.
I am hunting moose in Norway, but that is a smaller spice than the NWT/Yukon moose.

I seek a back pack hunt, in tents, walking around, stalking for the moose, hard hunting.
But, I like that. Makes me get close to nature, enjoy mother nature and relax.

Can I also hunt wild bison in these areas? In a combination?

Any tip on a outfitter for a moose hunt like I dream about?

Cheers all

This out fiter was posted about a couple of posts down seems to have a nice web site.

don't think you'll find a moose bison hunt in the same area.

I belive I heard about a limited Canadian wild bison hunt but I belive it is a fairly hard draw.

Ak has a limited wild bison hunt on a draw around Fsirbanks but drawing a tag can be hard.

Most people who want to shoot a bisob go to a Ranch to hunt them.

You could do a moose then a ranch bison hunt no trouble beside the travel between them. there might be a area you could get both done togather.

Check these guys out for a backpack moose hunt (no bison though)...
http://www.arcticred-nwt.com/index.html

These guys offer woods bison and moose, but I don't think they do much backpacking, and as I understand it, they usually hunt moose early and bison later...not sure if you could do it in combination...

You could do a combination moose/plains bison hunt with these guys in October...there's about 3 weeks of overlap in the seasons. They don't really do backpack hunts, but it'd be worth checking into (I am sure they can accomodate any hunters wishes!)...

Hope this helps!!

Tim Mervyn is as honest as the day is long and has a great area for both species. Not cheap, but worth every dime I have spent with him over the years. Feel free to PM me for information. I am not a booking agent and have no interest at all here btw.

Sinkanni River is certainly another option but I have never dealt with them.

I always admire people who voluntarily sign up for back pack moose hunts! All I can say is, you are a better man than I am! Eeker

On a more serious note, consider going moose hunting on horse back or by boat. Not only will you rejoice if you shoot a moose, but you have the better means to move around and look for the darn things. Don't forget, game densities in the Canadian wilderness don't compare favorably to what you are used to from Central Europe! You need to be able travel (and glass) to find game.

Quite apart from that, horse back hunting must rate as one of the finest hunts in the world! (Although I realize some people don't like horses and would rather hump their gear and any downed moose...).

P.S. If on a backpack combination hunt for moose and bison, if you shoot both, where will you fit the bison?? On top of the moose?? Big Grin

I spoke to my friend. They got a big bull bison. Terrible cold. Hunter is getting a full body mount of the bison. took 3 1/2 hours at 40 below to skin the hide out.

Oh, sounds great. I do not mind the cold at all, we have the same temperatures back home in Norway. Eeker
Yes, back packing is maybe a crazy mans thing....Have been told by the outfitter to go horse back or boat...LOL. So, it will be so.
Back pack is best for goat/sheep/wolf I was told. So, I have to listen.

But, a hard hunt is what I seek, not a atv hunt.
I love the nature, and love to be out in it.

But, from what I have learned now is, bison and moose, not easy at all to do in a combo.
Better to go moose and something, then bison on another location.

Right now I am looking at a fall/winter bison hunt with Musk ox trip. Moose I think will have to wait to next fall.

Will lett you know what I will do.

Haven't heard of a combo like that before. I like the way you think! Best of luck.

If you can pull this trip off, you'll have a unique experience. It won't be easy or cheap, but wow, it will be spectacular! The only thing I can add is that the thought that the bison hide may be a little past its prime by the time muskox hunting starts. I'll bet it will be a bit bleached and ragged, which seems about right for a big time adventure like you are looking at.

Cheers,
Dean

No surprise there. Tim is one of the most dedicated outfitters I have met and he knows that area like the back of his hand. Any pics or word on the B&C score?

About the only place I know of where you might be able to combine a fall moose hunt with bison would be in northern Alberta near Wood Buffalo National Park. There are a couple of guys who offer this combo..........you could try Andrew Lake Lodge for one and also contact the Alberta Professional Outfitters Association (APOS) and they can assist you with it.

OOH....that is potentially a very good deal. It looks like Andrew Lake Lodge adds bison for $5000 on their other hunts. $6000 for Moose and $5000 for Bison would be pretty fair if a guy got both. There are other outfits who do bison only hunts for $6000 or $6500 on the outskirts of WBNP.
