I going on the 13th North American Caribou Workshop in Winnipeg, Manitoba Oct. 25-28. As an avid hunter I would really like to do some hunting while I'm there.. Will try to use 7-10 days before or after the workshop. My funds are not unlimited.. Any suggestions? What can I hunt in "quite close" proximity? Caribou, whitetail deer? Well, if you want to stay close to the Peg, Caribou are out, as you'd have to go quite a ways North for that. White tail would be doable though, as well as waterfowl and upland game birds. Check the following link for a list of registered outfitters in MB. http://www.prairieoutdoors.com...p?prov=Manitoba#show Another option would be fishing! The red river is renowned for it's monster Walleye, especially late season lunkers that travel up the red from lake Winnipeg.

You could always take a run up to Churchill and count the endangered polar bears. From what I've seen on most Outfitter's websites is that they usually have their caribou camps between the second week in Sept on through the third week, one in particular lists Sept 9-21. The season for foreign non-residentsd is Aug 31 - Oct 18, at least in '09, and seasons don't usually vary that much year to year. So you'd be a bit late for bou season. Foreign non-resident hunters are only allowed to harvest caribou in Game Hunting Area #1 which is in the northernmost region of the province starting just north and west from Gillam, running up to Churchill and west to the Sask border up to Nunavut. Check the following link of the MB hunting guide PDF on pg 28 for the actual map. http://www.gov.mb.ca/conservat...g/pdfs/huntguide.pdf Now as for whitetails, they thrive in the Southern part of the province, and on up into the interlake (the region surrounded by all the big MB lakes in the middle part of the province). As for size, the trophy quality is pretty good, you're looking at deer ranging from 120 up to 150 in some areas, with some areas creating the possibility of up to 170 to 180 class bucks. Body size in these northern deer are about 200 lbs, with some being even heavier at up to 230-240lbs! The following link is from an outfitter only 2 hours drive (145 KM) North of Winnipeg and offers some good quality white tail hunting. http://www.big-antler-outfitters.com/ Judging from the time you'd be in MB, you'd have to harvest with either a muzzleloader, or Archery equipment, as general rifle doesn't start till Nov 8. The following link is another outfitter located 110 miles north east of Winnipeg in Nopoming Prov Park http://www.big-antler-outfitters.com/ Nopoming Prov Park is a stunningly beautiful part of manitoba, I've fished there a few times and absolutely love it there, it's on the edge of the precambrian sheild aka the Canadian sheild and is all rock with a bit of soil on top, lots of spruce trees, swamps, lakes, rivers, creeks, bogs etc. These are only 2 outfitters out of dozens and dozens, I'd suggest google'ing whitetail hunting manitoba, or whitetail hunting southern manitoba for more websites of outfitters. That way you can look at their harvest photo's and most have reference sections where previous customers give their opinions! As well as establishing some prices. Good luck on your search, and don't be afraid to ask more questions if need be!
