I need some help, suggestions.I just bought 2 303 enfields,I think they are sml(?).I would like to build either something I can use for long range varmit hunting or power it up more than what it is now for deer hunting,or feral hogs.I admit I don't know squat about a 303.So you'll have to explain what your suggested caliber is used for.I am looking more for function than pretty. And I'd like to be able to use the military mags that came with the rifle.I'm alraedy figuring I'll have to have it rebarreled and reload for it

If the barrels on the two rifle you have are good a simple 303 Epps reamer will give you some more strenghth. You are limited what you can do on #1 and #4 actions but the epps chamber is just the improved chamber. You can gain a nother 100-200 in velocity. There are a lot of wildcat based on the 303 and epps chambers off of them. The P14 rifle is the best of all of them to work with.

I miss hunting in B.C.

This isn't a matter of what you should do with it it's what you can do with it.

I would't rebarrel anything to the 303 other than another 303. The action BAR strength is very low.

The best thing you can do is put a good sporter stock on it and one of B-squares scope mounts and shoot it.

Elwood Epps used to make some very sleek looking 303 rifles with one piece stocks using the number 1 and number 4 Lee Enfield actions.

Apparently the number 1 has a very slim, light and handsome barel contour once you get rid of the wood.

There is another thread on the Canadian section by me about Epps and someone has included the address of the shop still in his name and the address of some relatives who have another gunshop.

They would know about these rifles. they let you use the old box magazine.

If you can get an old Elwood Epps catalogue from say the 70s or 80s there would be some photos of the Epps 303 sporters with one piece stocks.

Epps made many wildcats on the 303.

I think if you give the old 303 a try on hogs and deer you may be pleasantly surprised. The Dene and Inuit of northern Canada use them 10-1 more than any other rifle and live (yes, live) on moose and caribou. More than a few grizzlys have been killed with them as well.
On my last caribou hunt a Dene guide shot four cow caribou with four shots offhand starting at somewhere near 100 yards and the last at around 250 yards. All were hit in the neck. He was leaving soon and wanted to take some meat home to his village. Oh yeah, the 303 wore a peep site!
Good luck and good hunting!

Not much you can do to power up a SMLE(short magazine Lee Enfield) They are only good to 45,000 CUP.
As others have stated any hunting load will knock down anything you speak of.
I've seen marvilous things with reloaded 150's especially Hornady's bullet. Drive them at 2600fps and dont look back.

You could neck down to a 22, 24, or 25 for that varmint rifle, you just need to stay in the 45000 or less pressure range. As sugested Epps was the man for the 303 case. The 22/303 Sprinter (Australian) shows a 50gr at 3400+
22 Rocket(Australian again) 50gr as high as 3700
243/303- 75gr-3175 80- 3150
25/303 - 87gr-3000
270/303 - 130gr- 2600
Have fun whatever you do.
Ackley thought a 7mm/303 would be a good choice, but no data.
