My son and I are heading to NWT next September for a combo dall sheep Moose hunt.

I may be opening up a can of worms but my question is: my son shoots his 300rum quite well with 230 bergers. What does everyone whose done more moose hunting than me think of using 230grain bergers on Moose?

Thanks for your input.

That's plenty for moose. My 9yr just shoot a cow moose in Alaska a couple weeks ago with 130 gr copper bullets out of my .270. 227 yards shot to the heart and dead.

I use to guide for moose etc. in the NWT Mackenzie Mountains. They are big Alaska Yukon moose. Yes, generally speaking that bullet should work on a normal lung shot...but I have to tell you my experience with Berger on big game has not been overly impressive. They would not be my bullet of choice for a hunt like you are going on. If you needed to take a quartering towards you opportunity and drive the bullet through the near shoulder...well lets just say I would be a lot more comfortable using a Barnes TSX or a Swift A-frame.

That aside it is some of the most remote and specular country you will ever hunt. Enjoy!!

Just my .2C.

Please use a premium heavily constructed bullet. A 200 gr Accubond might be the ticket with high BC and heavy construction.

Thank you for everyone's input. I am indeed hunting in the MacKenzie Mountains with Raven's Throat Outfitters.
I understand the desire to use a heavily constructed bullet. I guess that I was hoping that the heavier bullet would enable deeper penetration if needed from the Berger bullet.
Thank you again everyone.

Last moose I killed was 1 and done with a 215 gr Berger at around 100 yds from a .30 Nosler. Shiras so not as big as those your chasing. But... I have killed 3 eland with 180 gr Bergers from my 7 SAUM. 2 were 1 shot kills and the 3rd [huge Livingston bull] I put a second one into just to be sure. I would expect it to work just fine. If you have concerns then use a TSX.

On an expensive hunt for such a large animal where you’re going to pay a trophy fee and/or be done after you killed or wounded & lost an animal, there is no way I’d be shooting a Berger Bullet. I’d stick with a premium, heavy construction bullet like a Barnes TTSX, Trophy Bonded Bearclaw, Swift or Nosler bullets. Berger’s have a great reputation for accuracy, but they’re lightly constructed and don’t penetrate like any of the ones mentioned. I’d be surprised if your son’s rifle doesn’t shoot a Nosler Accubond or Swift Scirocco just as well as the Berger’s and those bullets will hold together much better and penetrate a lot better.

Don't overthink it. Your going to one of the greatest places on earth to hunt a world class animal. They are not gonna let you shot long distance so all the high bc bullet crap is out the door.

You could just buy two boxes of good factory ammo loaded with a quality bullet, sight in, and go hunt. If you hand load and want to mess with it, good bullet choices are endless.

I'm sure your load will work, but why chance it?

I just killed a big bull in BC with a 185gr nosler partition .300 win mag at a 100 yd. If it was closer I was going to use the outfitter's 45/70 with open sights and 400gr ammo. Almost anything will do the trick. Don't overthink this.

A Barnes ttsx would be my first choice. I’ve hunted twice with ravensthroat, this will be a hunt of a lifetime for you and your son.

Thank you again for everyone's input.
I'm listening.
I'll work on some loads with 199 Hammer Hunters, 200 Accubonds and 180 partitions.
I know that we will not be shooting more than 300 yards. The only reason I was thinking of sticking with the 230 bergers was because I already have a great load developed for that gun.
I'm sure that I'll be able to find a load with those bullets that we can keep in the vitals of a moose at 300 yards Smiler
Thank you again everyone.

I killed a 55incher in the Koyukuk area last year shooting 130gr bergers chambered in .270......it's all about shot placement. Shoot what you are comfortable shooting.
