Hi all. I've been in contact with Kevin Olmstead about a future Dall Sheep hunt. Has anyone hunted with his outfit? Any information would be appreciated.

No. But I do know that he and his wife have several guiding areas in BC as well and he just got the area in the Yukon a short time ago. Originally he was kind of partnered up with Shockey and his area in the marketing department, but then they split and went their seperate ways.

The area is good and it has some good sheep. If you get one of the guides that has been there a few years you should have nothing to worry about.

I've hunted a couple dozen miles away from their area, had a great trip, shot a nice ram. Cool

Thanks for the replies so far.

They hunt two areas in the Yukon for Dalls - Kluane and Devil's Hole.

Can you describe the country? How was the hunting (meaning, what methods, etc). Are the early August dates better/worse than later in August?

Also, any idea what the resident hunting presures is West and NW of Whitehorse, or is there any in the guiding consessions?

I have heard that Kevin has shot off all of the big stone sheep in his area and that is why he moved to the Yukon. I can't verify this however.

If you want Fannin or Dalls, try Blackstone Outfitters. I went there in 2000 and shot a book ram, 165 4/8. He has dalls, caribou (lots) moose, griz, blacks, wolf. A great guy to go with. Horses or backpack, river travel, airplane.

Last time I checked all the outfitters in BC that have sheep in regions 6 and 7 are on a non-resident quota set by the Fish and Wildlife branch. It is highly unlikely that he has shot off all the big stone sheep in his area.

That said, there are lots of Dall sheep outfitters. The NWT is another good place to consider.

That's definitely not true. The outfitters ARE hard on the mature rams in an area, but Olmstead's area in BC is still one of the premier locations to find a good Stone. His quota is not that big though, so I presume he is in the Yukon for economies of scale.

Cheers,

Try Stan Stevens in the NWT--I hunted with him and it was great.

I have no first hand information but on very solid second hand reports I would advise you to check Mr. Olmsteads client list. Talk to as many as you can ,not the references he supplies. For reasons I wont go into here I would look around.

Trademark Texan,

I spoke with a chap yesterday that had booked a Stone Sheep Hunt with an Olmstead at Prophet Muskwa Outfitters and he was really upset over his deposit of 12K being kept.
I would not hunt with someone that would keep a deposit and not roll it over to a later hunt. Especially when Terminal illness prevented the hunt. I don't know if this is the same outfitter but if it is I can P.M. you the chaps number if yoyu want to get the story first hand.
