Wow, the headlines should read "bullet proof deer of Canada need .300wby's and neck shots to conquer" Jebuz, your bullet and cartridge selection is excellent. Shoot straight and listen toyour guide. Have a great time. (Instant kills with the esophagus, someone hold my sides, they hurt)

Do you usually make up your own headlines? kindly provide the quote where I said that an esophagus provides an instant kill. If you can not, kindly edit your post and stop putting words in my mouth. The esophagus is not part of the C.N.S., unlike the cervical spine, and will not therefore provide an instant kill. If you are going to poke fun at others , the least you can do is to fill out your profile and location, are you wanted or something... Cold Zero

He posted quickly fatal not instant.I guess it depends on the difference between quickly and instant. To me the difference is only a few seconds.

Hmmm, the 'juggler vein'. Is that anywhere near the clown artery?

No, actually it is near the carotid "ehh" artery. You know, that thing that bleeds a lot. Cold Zero

Wow, um it's jugular. Dear god, man, you might want to let this one go. I also do not post were I am from regularly because I am law enforcment, and certain people would like to find me. But my general vicinity is between British Columbia and Saskatchewan. Why so defensive?

cold zero, it seems that I mistakenly made fun of your spelling of jugular. The quote below appears to have been edited from your original posting. Your choice for neck shots seems to have created some controversy here. If you have had success with it, continue to do so. Everyone has their own comfort level of the types of shots they will take. My comfort level is with lung shots. Tracking a mule deer for two days shot through the neck by my hunting partner on a hunt in the Frenchman River Valley was not my idea of fun. It was a poorly placed shot that passed through the neck between the esophagus and the spine. There was no bleeding or obvious tissue damage, just an entry and exit hole. This was with a 180 grain Nosler Partition from a 300 Win Mag at around 300 yards. We were both surprised that there was no damage done from the shock of the bullet impact. The buck just trotted off. A lung shot finished him off when we finally caught up with him. Of course a sample of one is hardly representative of what a neck shot can or cannot do. I have shot a deer with a neck shot successfully. I took it because it was the only available shot. Would I do it again? Certainly. I had a good rest, a good rifle and a good load and a shot within my capabilities.
As far as the questions regarding the 280 for whitetail in Saskatchewan, these appear to have been answered by Jimno2506 himself. The 150 grain Nosler Partition is an excellent choice for all game animals in Saskatchewan.

JEBUZ, The bottom line is that you are shooting a good bullet from an excellent cartridge. Choose the shot placement that you are most comfortable with and you will experiance no problems with any whitetails. Even Alberta whitetails, will tip over with a correctly placed shot. And the last time I checked my Kevlar was still hanging in my locker so you won't have to contend with any armoured deer! "There are three kinds of people in the world. stumblejumper; to me the difference is that a head shot/brain housing group or neck shot (c.n.s.) provide instant, as in dead right there dramatic kills. quickly fatal, to me means they run off a short distance, whether that is a few seconds or 1 or 2 minutes? bottom line they are out of your rifle sights and have the prospect of being unrecoverable. if that helps? m.h.o. a. fleming p.m. rec'd. as for being touchy, read this thread and put yourself in my shoes. i shoot all animals with .30 or better. i do not own anything less than a .30 cal. i like to use plenty of gun and not the the minimum that will do the job. i used the .300 wthby because it has a wood stock that i would not use on any other hunt, so this is the only opportunity for me to use this particular gun. not because these deer are tougher or armor plated. as for ammo selection, the 220 gr. are the only ammo i have for it and at $60 a box, the 220 gr. will kill just as much as the 180 gr., but i don't have to buy another box. i have a nice dark horned 150+ 10 pointer on my wall because i listened to my outfitter and shot straight when i had the chance to and listened to my outfitter who told us "do not hesitate to take the neck shot since that is all you may get in the thick brush". so i made the 45 yd. neck shot from a solid rest. anyone who could not make this shot probably should not be hunting. the year i took this deer of the 4 deer taken that thanksgiving week, 3 of them were taken with a neck shot. the fourth deer was taken with a .375 h.h., i am sure you guys will love that. that guy was an african hunter and he took what he liked or what he had, not sure which and he used a gun that killed his deer just as dead as a .270 would have. dead is dead, we are not meat hunting. as for shot selection and placement. i am sure we all know of stories where animals have been wounded and have gotten away with wounds to all areas that should have been fatal hits for all types of reasons. i shoot my magnums no better or worse than my regular calibers. Due to practice, i am not recoil sensitive. bottom line; listen to your outfitter shoot straight when you have to take a solid rest if you can take shots within your ability, at a presentation that will allow for a high percentage at a vital area. I briefly owned a Remington 280 until I sold it. I hunted with it and shot 4 deer with it. When I bought the gun it was sighted in using a 140 grain ballistic tip which I continued to use because I was given a free box. This is the sorriest excuse for a round I've ever hunted with. I made 1 perfect heart shot and 3 lung shots. The heart shot the buller did not exit and the animal dropped in its tracks. Of the three lung shots, the deer ran more than 60 yards, two of them I had next to NO BLOOD trail because the bullet failed to exit or in one case exited with next to no exit hole. It took me hours to recover two bucks and a dog to recover the doe. None of which ran more than 100 yards. Though I do hunt in swamp country so terrain can get tricky. I think ballistic tips should be used solely on critters and varmints not big game. Give me a lead tipped power point with controlled expansion anyday of the week. I hunt religiously with a 257 Roberts shooting with 120 grain Hornady's P+ power points. This is a factory load as I'm not all into the reloading just yet, but I am young (33) so maybe over time I will become enthralled with reloading like so many on this board. What I can tell you is I know a lot of good factory loads and a few bad ones. Of the few bad ones I know, 280 ballistic tips are a joke.

Cold Zero, always enjoy reading your posts. My outfitter would agree with you as well, given the caveat that the neck shot is within the comfort zone of the shooter. You have obviously spent time in the tall timber of Saskatchewan and know what you are talking about. Whether its a double lung, breaking both shoulders, or disabling the CNS (via a neck shot), the buck is going be anchored. Given the appropriate circumstances I tend to favor Cold Zero's Choice...........these deer are heavy and I like to avoid dragging them far if at all possible........haha. Here are a few of the deer I have taken in the past in SK. Far from my best, but what I have uploaded on my computer. Neck shot one, and broke both shoulders on the other one. Nosler Partitons/340 Wby. Heading back up on Nov 18th.
