Hey,
The American law of requiring a passport to 'enter and re-enter the United States' will come in effect in January of 2008. With this new law, Americans will need a passport to travel to any country, including Canada. Canadians will also need a passport to 'enter' the United States. The Canadian laws dont change, but the US Laws will require the passport for re-entry.

Many US politicians are trying to get this idea blocked. In NY state our wonderful (yeah right) US senators Clinton and Schumer are against the whole idea because it will cost people money to get a passport. THEIR idea is to make everyone (even those with passports) get some sort of ID card to cross the border. Of course that will mean another government bureucracy to monitor this new ID card. Couple of idiots, but Clinton may be our next president (scary thought)

Its already a pain in the butt going from one part of Alaska to the other. There should be a border station at Haines Junction instead of the pain in the butt twice crossing.I under stand its not Canadians fault but our retarded Govts fault. It cracks me up that one border guard will give you the fifth degree while another will let you go by without cecking anything.I always here that RV s from the lower 48 hardly get checked while Alaskans going back to Alaska get checked alot.

Do you lock your door at night when you go to bed. Do you lock your car at the grocery store.
My view is that as long as the passport is used for security purposes and for no other reason its okay. Once it takes away a freedom rather than protects freedom is when I won't like it.

Yes, I do when in the US.

I do not when at my place in Canada. I even hide the pickup key and tell all the neighbors where when I am in the US in case someone needs to borrow it. Big Grin Once I left it in the ignition for 4 months.

If travelling with a passport into Canada makes you feel more "Secure" then knock yourself out.I dont think the enemy will be checking for them though. American "security" measures kind of remind me of Canadian gun laws; they punish the innocent and are ignored by the bad guys.

What's the big deal to show them a passport and let them stamp it. It's not exactly rocket science here.
There's a lot more important things to worry about then rather or not I have to show someone a passport to cross the border.

The issue Jarrod is that less than 10% of Americans and about 35% of Canadians have passports. This will severly restrict border travel, not good for border communities on either side.

That may be so. But even a dumb hillbilly like me got a passport very easily. I filled out the form, paid the 20 or 30 dollars fee or whatever it was and it was no time till I had a passport.

I wonder how many illegalmexicans crossing into the US will get passports.I have had no problems crossing the border except ging back into Alaska. For some reason Alaskans catch more hell going into Alaskas than anyone else. They let RV's with tourist right in.You clould carry alot of bad stuff in a big RV.

Instead of requiring the illegal immigrants from Mexico to obtain passports, I say we move them in with Senator Clinton. She might enjoy half of them. which half I'm not sure. :-)

They both can get off their asses, have a picture taken, and mail the application and fee. They are good for a damn decade (at least the American ones).
