I am flying to Canada and plan to take ammo with me on the plane. United Airlines says I can carry ammo in my gun case. Anyone know if there is a problem getting in and out of Canada transporting ammo in this manner? Or do I have to pack it separatetly in my checked bag?

Alternatively, I could send it with my hunting partner who is driving but I can't get a clear answer from the Canadian authorities whether he can bring ammo of a different caliber than his rifle. Anyone know the answer to that question?

In canada ammo can not be in your gun case,it must be in your checked bags. You are allowed 5 kgs per person and you must tell the ticket agent that there is ammo in your bag.

I don't think customs cares. My understanding is that the airlines make up the rules about where the ammo goes. Since you've already taken care of the legalities talking to Border Services, I'd next talk to the airline.

Just arrived in Canada. Ammo with gun in same case from US on United,but Air Canada made me put it in separate cases when I checked in this morning for the next leg of my trip. It may be an airline company policy issue. Air Canada also charged $50 for "firearm handling".

FWIW you can drive across the border with up to 5,000 rounds of ammunition (some calibre restrictions may apply). I brought 5,000 rounds of .223 stuff up a couple years ago, no problem with customs.

Canada as a country could care less where your ammo is packed but that surprises me United allows that. Every airline I've flown with anywhere in the world has required it to be seperate from the firearm.
