This year has been one of the harder seasons to find good bucks and last years winter sure did a number on the population!!

My father, a friend, and myself went hunting last fri pushing bluffs to see what we could find and it wasn't until late that evening we found a respectable buck. It happened quick as we were pushing I heard yelling and as I ran to the outside edge of the bluff I found this buck running full out at around 180 yards. He was running from my right to left quartering away as I got a line on him and finally made my shot somewhere in the range of 200-220yrds. The shot felt good and moments later some 15yrds my buck fell!!

He's not a monster by any means although having worked relatively hard for this one opportunity I was pleased none the less.

I was using my 375 with 300 grain hornady bullets far from a standard white tail combination but a lethal combination.

Good for you!

The deer are so far down in our area of Manitoba I did not even buy a tag and will not kill a deer on our farm. I would feel bad shooting a buck right now as there are so few deer that you can drive for miles and never see a deer track.

Some guys we know from Winnipeg came up here to hunt on a relatives farm near us and they only stayed two days and drove home. Never saw a track, never mind something standing in them.

Hopefully in 4 or 5 years, barring any more horrid winters, we will see some decent deer numbers again and the kind of bucks the area is famous for producing.

Yep, some areas are horrible...others aren't as bad. Where I hunt there have been a number of bucks taken, some of considerable size (I tagged out opening day with a 150 6/8 gross)

I've seen pics of another MONSTER taken by Sprucewoods Prov Park, and another 7x7 in the Souris river valley. So there are still some sizable bucks, a guy just really has to put in his time.

I've been hunting hard since opening day of archery and finally took one after almost 2 solid months of hunting hard, so it can be done. A boat load of patience is required on a year like this.

As you stated, hope it's back to normal within the next 3 to 5 years!!

I suppose the reason for my posting this hunt was to hopefully spur on others to share how they have made out this year so far. I posted earlier in the year about draw results and had some positive feed back on results which was nice to hear. All has been silent since so I decided to try and get the ball rolling with what can be considered an average deer hunt. Nice to hear about the herd of 200 elk seen, and that coyote guy shot a dandy!! Would love for you to do a short report with a pic or two thrown in! I also remember skyline receiving a land owners tag and your wife drew a tag also??

I have had a couple friends shoot 155 class bucks with really good mass but they sent the pics to my phone so not sure how to post?

Good hunting to all and thanks for your feedback!!!

Things are also very slow here in my area (Interlake). Still some does around, but nowhere near the number that we are accustomed to seeing, not by half. Due to out-of-province work I was only able to hunt for one week during archery season, and not at all during blackpowder season. I have hunted all day so far in rifle season, missing only two days due to crazy high winds...that's the only reason I am on the internet today instead of outside. Smiler

A total of 13 days, most of them dawn-to-dusk, has produced sightings of only 2 bucks: a six-pointer spotted on neighbouring property, and a weird little spiker that has cruised by me on two occasions. The first time (4 days ago) her looked like he was on a doe-chasing mission, head down and trotting along quickly. The second time (yesterday) he acted like he had not a care in the world, ignoring doe bleats and looking around nervously when I grunted. Where is the rut???

Very few scrapes/rubs to be found, and coyotes are thick thieves. I've shot three already while waiting for non-existent deer, and they are neatly piled up in a spot visible from my den window, covered up with Ravens, Magpies and a couple of Bald Eagles.

I have fingers crossed for the wind dying down this afternoon to allow an evening hunt.
