I just read a very disturbing comment on a Canadian hunting site to the effect that a well known American hunting consultant has been either charged and/or convicted of poaching a RM Bighorn Ram in Canada, possibly in one of the National Parks along the BC-Alberta border?

While the original comment mentioned who this is, I prefer not to post the name and business concerned, until/unless I know for certain what the facts are. This is, obviously, a matter of extreme concern to Canadian conservationists and any such action/conviction will assist the "antis" in their campaign to ban hunting here.

As a related aside, this morning, I found out that an extremist environmental group, which has already purchased a BC GO territory is negotiating to buy two adjacent ones and they flatly state that these purchases will enable them to ...stop commercial trophy hunting... in an area of the BC coast that is ...six times larger than Yellowstone Park..., in the USA......

The connection between these two situations is VERY obvious, to me and I would appreciate any real info. on the first instance that anyone here may have. NOTHING will energize mass public opinion against foreign and even resident hunting like this type of thing, it is "tailor-made" for the extremist-style campaigns of the PETA-type gangs........

While I have my disagreements with you about the connection between the two, I wholeheartely agree with your sentiment that this is wrong, and if the court finds this guy guilty, I hope you have some appropriately severe penalties for this piece of human refuse. Poachers are scum, and should be treated as such. Maybe you know if BC is a partner in the US antipoaching agreement that most of our states are in? I'm not sure if such a thing is even possible, but essentially if you violate a game law in one, you've violated it in all, and the various penalties (such as loss of hunting privileges) apply in all.

I suspect that the anti hunting groups have been planning this for some time as far as the purchase of hunting areas, and I would tend to doubt that its because of the above mentioned poaching incident that they did this... They just don't like any of us.

Please let us all know who this guy is when you get some hard information.

Tony, thank you very much for posting this info. and I am DAMM GLAD that it was a rumour as we have had some nasty incidents here recently and our urbanized and rather "leftist" press tends to "paint all hunters with the same brush"...as is very likely the case throughout North America, now.

I did not want to post who this was or even the GO concerned as I do not believe in "character assassination" of any type and I hoped that someone here might have the facts.

I used to work for the Alberta Environment Ministry in the general area where this was supposed to have taken place and, while on duty, I have observed RMBH rams that are world records without question, but, they are a LONG, HARD climb from anywhere you would dare take a horse. So, I am naturally concerned and am pleased that this is only a rumour...some jealous character, I imagine.

I will ask Canuck to remove this thread after it has been here for a couple of days so that people can see your post giving the facts. Again, thanks.

Dewey,

Glad to do so. I hate to see lynch mobs formed on nothing more than rumor.
