What should I be looking for in a worm pill for my dogs (Beagles). Are the one's at the pharmacy just as effective as those from the vet at three x the cost? What do you use...for your dogs?

Also, the stuff you pour on the back of dogs for flees, some of it is three times the cost of other stuff. What gives?

I'm not a vet, so I don't try to diagnose my dogs' ailments myself. Yes, you may pay a bit more at the vet clinic, but you are also paying for the vet's expertise. If it were my dog, I would get my deworming meds from the vet.

We don't have much of a problem with fleas in Alberta, so I can't give you any advice there!

Exit 31 Wooly gave you some good advice. However there is a little more to it. The medication for worms is different from one manufacturer to another. There is also more than one type of worm. Some medications work better on one type of worm than on others so it is not a good idea to use the same medication time after time. It would probably be a good idea to go to the vet and he /she may test you dog and recommend a medication. You should keep track of that medication. You should them worm your pet on a regular schd with different meds, going back to the vet perscribed medications about every third worming. This holds true for horses and dogs according to my vet. Also while the vet perscribed meds may seem to cost more check out the active ingrediants. Some of the cheaper pet food store products are not as concentrated and you end up having to use 3 times as many pills to properly treat your dog. You haven't saved anything. Hope that helps

Exit31; I think I would skip the pet store meds and take my dog to the vet. I have a cocker that got tapeworms, and treated them several times with PetCo tapeworm medicine, it didn't get rid of them. I finally took her to the vet and he gave me 3 pills, on day number two she dumped the big momma, hell I tought she had ate a white plastic bag and was crapping it out, worm was 18 inches long and as big around as my finger, made my butt hurt just looking at it.
