Greetings all. I am flying into Cranbrook from the States on Sept. 8. The next morning my outfitter (Marty Lightburn - Rocky Mountain High) will be picking me up from my hotel.

The info. that Marty provided included a couple of hotel recommendations and a limo service to get from the airport to the motel. If I recall, it seems like it was about a 30min drive.

Are there any alternative means of transportation that would save a guy a buck? Any buses or mass transit system? Also, are there any hotels closer to the AP that might be a reasonable cab ride?

I haven't had a chance to run this by Marty yet. Thought I might see if there were some "Cranbrook Locals" on the Canadian forum that would have some advice.

One last thing... Is there some sort of a meteorlogical site or something that would give me weather history for the area? I know that the weather can vary greatly. Just want to have a little history to help me pack.

Thanks a million.

the airport's kind of in the middle of nowhere, the limo might your best bet if it has a flat rate to cranbrook where the hotels are cabs might be pricey. the only hotel closer is at the St. Marys casino, but that's kind of out of the way. you can try thewheathernetwork.com for the history you want.

Many thanks Axle.

If that is what it takes to get to the motel, so be it. I just HATE the thought of getting into a limo.... I'd be much more comfortable paying the same price and hopping into an F150...

I hunted with Marty in 02. At the time they wanted some ridiculous amount to fly into Cranbrook, so my partner & I got a cheap flight to Spokane, rented a Jeep & drove to Cranbrook.

On weatherunderground.com you can get weather history for specific dates, but what is going on in the mountains is likley to be different than the temps in Cranbrook.

I was there the last 10 days of Sept. The nights were cold with heavy frost, but most days warmed up into the 50's. The last night we were in the mountains it snowed about 10". By the time we rode on horseback to where the truck was parked there was 4-5 ", & after driving 20 minutes it was all rain.

If your interested, send me your email address & I'll shoot you some pictures of the terrain. It's unbelievable country.

Good luck!

Mighty nice of ya Euge. I'd love to see the pics and hear of your adventure, game seen and game taken. nimrodrx@hotmail.com

Yes, the flight was pricey (about $950), and I have to make two connections. I hate connections. Fortunately, I had enough frequent flier points to cover the entire flight.

The airport is only about 10 to 12 minutes (I've done it in 8 mins) drive from town, partway between Cranbrook and Kimberly. All the hotels are on the strip (the highway) through town, so there is none closer to the airport.

There is a shuttle to and from the airport, but I am not sure about the schedule...you might get stuck waiting around for it a bit.

Cabs aren't too expensive from the airport.

If I am around, for the price of a beer I might be able to pick you up. Smiler That is the bowhunting season week though, AND a Saturday, so there is a REALLY good chance I'll be in a hunting camp myself.

Feel free to PM though and we can compare schedules when the time gets closer.

The BEST website for weather is Weather Underground. Here is the link for the Cranbrook forecast... Weather Underground Cranbrook . Navicate down the page a little and you'll see a link for detailed history and seasonal averages. Also, in the top right hand corner is a link to "Trip Planner"...it will also give you detailed data on averages for your specified dates.

Most years the weather in this country is fantastic in Sept. It may drop to freezing overnight, and get anywhere up to 20 to 25 deg celcius during the day. Its usually clear although a week of rain in Sept is not uncommon...whether thats good or bad just depends which week, eh!

Cheers,
Canuck

Thank you gentlemen! The goodwill shared by members of this site continues to impress…

Canuck, that’s mighty nice of you. I’ll touch base with you before I leave. Who knows, maybe you’ll be tagged out by then and have a great story to share over a couple beers.

BCTrapper, thanks for the link to the Cranbrook airport. Glad to hear you’re seeing some grizz in Marty’s area. I’m really hoping to get some pics of a couple while I’m out there. Let us know how the hunt goes. What kind of elk numbers are you seeing?
