So, as I investigate a dall sheep hunt, what are generic questions that you guys ask any outfitter when researching a hunt/area/guide?

I put most of the emphasis on references.Have the outfitter provide as many references as possible and take the time to talk to them.Make sure that the references have hunted with the outfitter recently.

I agree with Stubblejumper. All of the GO's are going to tell you what you want to hear.

Once you have decided what kind of hunt you want (horse, backpack), short list all of the GO's that provide that type of hunt and then start checking references.

There are a few on this board that can provide some info on areas/outfitters once you have selected your short list.

FWIW, something you may want to keep in mind...much to my distaste, many of the backpacking outfitters in the NWT have taken to the Russia/Asia method of sheep hunting....they drop you off and change camps with helicopters. If that doesn't float your boat either, make sure to ask about it.

Cheers,
Canuck

I have never used an outfitter. Maybe you shouldn't be asking in the Canadian forum....people here probably wouldn't be using outfitters to hunt in Canada. I might be wrong I suppose people from other provinces might. I'm just thinking maybe asking in the big game hunting forum might be more productive. There have been many posts in the africa forum on this very topic.

Actually I have used several Canadian outfitters to hunt in Canada even though I am Canadian.I have used outfitters to hunt species such as grizzly or mountain goat that are extremely restricted in Alberta ,but are much more abundant in B.C..I have also used outfitters to hunt species such as cougar, because I don't have dogs. Also there are people on this Canadian forum that do know some of these outfitters personally or know the areas that they hunt in.Some good information can be found here.
