I have no idea what I can do legally in Canada or where/who to go to for components. My idea was to end up with a .338-06 hunting rifle. I would like to do the less technical parts of assembly myself. My few attempts at web searchs so far have not been helpful. Hope someone here can give me some pointers on this.

compontants www.brownells.com www.midwayusa.com www.boydboys.com www.hsprecision.com www.basnersrifle.com These are stock producers, barrel producers and supply houses. As for law you will have to do that dirty work yourself. I am not a Canook and have no idea where to look!

If, you want a competently assembled rifle that will perform to an acceptable level of safety, reliability, accuracy and also look nice, there are not many choices in Canada. However, based on personal experience and comments from people I trust, I would suggest the following. 1.) Bill Leeper at Baynes Lake, B.C. mostly metalwork, synthetic stocks 2.) Gordon Mayfield at 100 Mile(?), good general 'smith. 3.) Jim Dugan at Saskatoon, SK, very good reputation, slow. 4.) Corlane Sports at Dawson Creek, B.C., build complete rifles in various configurations, gen. 'smithing. 5.) If, you want a bbl. installed, headspaced and some other work, check with Shane at Relaible Gun in Vancouver, B.C., they have various 'smiths that do work for them. They are good enough that I had my multi-thousand dollar Merkel drilling detail stripped and the firing mechanism adjusted by them, in their shop at the rear of their store. 6.) Bevan King at Pouce Coupe, B.C., makes and installs barrels, very reasonable and well made. There are other very good people here, but, most of them are part-timers who I cannot say for sure are always interested in doing work. There are a couple of famous gunsmiths here, as well, but, they are not interested in projects for the average guy and my opinon of their products is not too high, either.

Hello; If you are looking to import a custom rifle, or even the action, there's an article in the latest issue of Western Sportsman, about some outfit in Montana that specialize in jumping through all the import hoops. Grizz

Quote: I have had Gordon put together one rifle for me and had him do small repairs on others. He is a good honest fellow that does reasonable work for a reasonable fee. I would not hesitate to have him build another rifle for me.

I'd give Ted Gaillard a call at 306-752 3769. He builds a lot of accuracy equipment for benchrest shooters, and those guys are pretty exacting. Ted's barrels have won their share of benchrest matches. He's located in St.Brieux, SK and his website is: www.shootingpaul.netfirms.com/GAILLARD.html Best wishes. Cal - Montreal

I had my 338.06 bult by Bill Leeper on a '51 FN.It's temporaryly in a Parker-Hale stock, now.I haven't ordered the blank, yet.I would go with the barrel maker your smith likes, but give him the contour and length. It's a hunting rifle ,not a bench rest. Stocks,plastic,semi-inlet or blanks are easy to import, just pay your GST and PST.Stockmakers are harder to find and afford. You can hunt longer with the wind at your back
