Well, I got a doe tag in 406 and Sat. I took out the old 303 and went for a walk in the mountains. I was going to bring the muzzeloader but haven't gotten around to getting a ramrod for hunting use yet. The custom brass rod i have is nice but way too heavy for trotting around in the mountains with. It just didn't seem nice to shoot a little doe with anything bigger and I wanted to instill at least a bit of challenge into this "big" hunt I had planned.

Anyway I went in and walked a good long ways. Truthfully it was way too far, if I had gotten a doe she would have been awfully heavy to get out that far. Some days you don't want to be successful!!

What a gorgeous day it was though, I sat in the bush and watched some granolas hiking through some bush-was hoping they would flush my doe for me. Luckily they didn't and I was spared some work!! When they seemed like they wanted to stray into "my space" I did a fawn distress call. It worked beautifully, they vacated fast, all the while looking over their shoulder for the creature that had made such a terrible noise. I'm sure they will have a great story to tell around the water cooler at the office.

I went over a couple ridges and got off the beaten path, further than most hunters would do without horses. Finally I found a nice little creek with all kinds of deer sign and yup you guessed it-elk sign. Finally the real reason for hunting does revealed itself. What a good way to do next years scouting for elk. If I had told the wife I wanted to go scouting it wouldn't have gone nearly as well as "sorry dear I have a doe tag to fill."
