"The Conservative government has introduced legislation to formally disarm the contentious long-gun registry, though the bill won't be voted on until the fall."

"'The effort of trying to track down every single long-gun (rifles and shotguns) in Canada has been ineffective, costly and wasteful and has not led to a reduction in crime with guns,' Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day told the media Monday."

"'Duck-hunters, farmers and law-abiding gun owners do not pose a threat to Canadians, criminals do,' Day said." ...

Hello;
There is nothing new here, but let's remember we have a Minority government. While the conservatives can make all kinds of administrative changes that will nullify the opressiveness of the Gun Registry, they can't abolish the thing unless they can get one of the opposition parties to support them. Given that all of them have come out against abolition, that doesn't appear likely and I can't see the Conservatives making this a matter of Confidence.
I suspect this thing won't dissapear until after the next Gemeral election, when the chances of a Conservative majority seem pretty good at the present time.

All of which have already said they won't. I suspect we're looking at another election next year.

Nice to see the "realists" here supporting... Hmmmmm who are they supporting. Always looks to me that the "realists" do more to support the ani-gun concerns than the pro gun people. I know they don't see it that way but if it appears that way to the anti-gun people then it is that way.

Part of the Conservative election platform was a promise to do away with the long gun registry.
All well and good, eliminate the $2 Billion a year waste. (and waste it on something else)
As someone has already noted, with a minority gov't, the chances of this happening right now are slim to annorexic. If it ever does come to fruition, and the registry is disbanded, has anyone given thought to the existing records held by the RCMP (and available to every cop in Canada?)Do you actually believe these records will be destroyed? Silly man. The Canadians that registered guns are screwed forever. I registered 2 that I kept at my cottage in N. Ont. but I have since sold and brought them all to the US. Now all we gotta worry about Hillary.........Geeeeezzzzzzzzz.

I'd rather be sorry for something I'd done, than for something that I didn't do.

"...existing records held by the RCMP..." I wouldn't worry about it. The RCMP dealt with the old 'green slips' for eons before the current mess was created. When they were told it was being taken away, they promptly destroyed any existing records.
It is suspected that, aside from the added BS for shooters, that's why everybody had to re-register the restricted firearms they had registered for years and years.
