My Grandfather passed away last year at 88 years and he knew Farley Mowat many years ago. It was in the late 50's I believe and they shared a pint or two on a regular basis in Rankin Inlet where my Grandfather was working at the mine. As with all authors he gets beat up frequently, but despite some creative licence he still turned out work that many enjoyed. You don't have to agree with someone to enjoy their writing and also know that they shared a love of the north and the wildlife and people who call it home. ______________________________________________ The power of accurate observation is frequently called cynicism by those who are bereft of that gift.

Farley had a great book concerning his war experience as a courier and motorcycle driver. He claimed to have driven into an enemy headquarter by error and was taken to the commanding officer who asked him to return to his unit with the request of what could be terms of surrender! I really appreciated this book. Oh, and Farley could not finish the war if I recall. He could not continue at some point, due to suffering a nervous breakdown. I think he was a really good and brave man, even though I did not always agree with his many ideas.

Farley Mowat was a rabid animal rights nutjob who filled most of his books with complete bull$hit but sold it as fact. His stance on the Atlantic seal hunt and his book A Whale For the Killing are cases in point. I respect his military service, but that is all when it comes to Farley Mowat.

Apparently, the name given to him by Northern residents was, Hardly Knows It. Did enjoy The Farfarers, fanatical believers in Man made Climate Change would do well to read it. Grizz Indeed, no human being has yet lived under conditions which, considering the prevailing climates of the past, can be regarded as normal. Yes…… that is correct, Hardly Know It is the term bantered about in the area. Having said that, I tried to be tactful in my views on this because I get really weary seeing people on the internet beat the shit out of someone who has died. It is in bad taste and really not needed. Ever since the internet arrived civility and just plain decent behaviour seem to have flown out the window. ______________________________________________ The power of accurate observation is frequently called cynicism by those who are bereft of that gift.

Unless of course you're a seal hunter in Nfld. Grizz Indeed, no human being has yet lived under conditions which, considering the prevailing climates of the past, can be regarded as normal. When it comes to Mowat, I think I should be allowed to call a spade a spade, as I have been doing it for years. For the last 15 years my standard reply when discussing any full-of-shit, "animals are just beautiful loving creatures" wacko(a-al Timothy Treadwell) has been; "Oh yeah, he is a regular Farley-F#*king-Mowat!" Not to dance on a man's grave, but this POS can rot in hell.(maybe I will dance...) He was a great writer but he was also a self aggrandizing fraud and liar. He spun flat out lies that caused public opinion to shift in a manner that still haunts us today. I live in a state where some people want to screw our wilderness for their own gain and I am one who believes that we need to take a hard line to defend our wildlife. But the bottom line is that Mowat lied to sell his tales and his lies cause a lot of harm.
If you have any questions about the man's ego just look at the bookshelf behind him in the photo in the link provided by the original poster. Jason "You're not hard-core, unless you live hard-core." _______________________ Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt. Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure. -Jason Brown

Jason , I hadn't looked at the books in the photo. There is the book I have, " West Viking" but it seems he didn't sell all of the " Never Cry Wolf " books . Were the earlier books of more factual and less 'save the animals ' type ?

Farley Mowat's writings and beliefs were the root cause of a long-running gun battle between my father and one of my teachers when I was still in grade school. This lady was as rabid an anti-hunter/animal-rights loonie as any you will find today, despite the 1970-ish setting of this debacle. She set her sights on me when I refused to sign a petition to end the seal hunt, and the fact that I loved and also hunted animals was something she could not accept. She worshipped Farley Mowat as though he were the second coming of Jesus Christ...I thought, and often said, that he was an idiot. My father agreed with one of us...guess which one. R.I.P. Farley Mowat, I would never say "rot in hell" to anyone who thinks he is fighting the good fight, even if I know he is mistaken. However, the mundane feat of dying is something at which all of us eventually succeed, so it certainly isn't a reason to elevate the person in question to a higher level of respect and admiration than he enjoyed in life.

I liked the book Never Cry Wolf, as it was written, fiction. One of my favourite teachers had his bubble burst, when he met Mowat. How he summed up his new findings, the man is a lazy weirdo!

I lost all respect for him after seeing him on a CBC program. Nutbar... Then I read " And no birds sang". What a pile of steaming BS. He basically deserted his troops in the field in the face of the enemy and ran. He was the OIC there at that moment. Sorry but l could not get past that one no matter what.
