I have been hunting moose for more years than I can count now. Always taken meat bulls, ie up to 45" in BC/Alberta.
Before I hang it up I would like to take a real monster Canada moose.....55"+ or bigger.
Any recommendations would be appreciated....preferably if you have hunted with the outfitter recently.
Not interested in Yukon moose, but one close to the border might be the ticket??
Cheers,

May I be rude to ask why not a yukon moose
I would have thought that's where the better genetics are ... No ?

Is it the cost or terrain

Newfoundland has moose coming out is its backside however these eastern moose are not in the 55's

Care to share your view

Since you have hunted moose for many moons

Have you tried an owl call rather than the usual ?

The Yukon Moose is the Alaska-Yukon and if I were to hunt that species I would go to Alaska and be looking for 70"+...I simply want a big Canada moose...might even hang it on the wall...so far I have just kept the horns and put them on a plaque......
So, it's just preference!!

You might want to contact Tom Sallows in northern Alberta. He's killing as many big Canada moose as anyone right now. http://mountainmanadventures.com/

Kawdy Outfitters.

They kill some big Canadian Moose. Their hunting area borders the Yukon.

Recently my moose hunting has been in Alberta. Although they do take some big bulls, I think BC might offer more consistent opportunity for big bulls in the north country. Kawdy is a great recommendation and I do know the Lancaster family.
Thanks guys...any others out there would be appreciated.

Stone Mountain Safaris in Northern BC offers some really good Moose. Big Moose are hard to come by, but I thing they take 50+ inchers every year. 55 inch, well now that is a tough order for a Canadian, but it does happen. You'll have to really picky to get that size of a monster, but good luck to you.
Google Stone Mountain and give Leif a call, they just finished up for the season so it's a great time to book.

Another vote for SMS, Leif is first class fellow.
I would also check out Golden Bear they have genetically the best moose in BC.

Scoop Lake kills some real nice BC bulls. I also think that the price is not too crazy. My friend just got back and shot a bull that was about 52 but the mass and palms were huge.

Thanks much guys!! This has been very helpful.

What are your thoughts about Prophet-Muskwa Outfitters? Ron Spomer wrote a very interesting hunt report on these guys recently.

Scoop lake, I will vouch for forsure. Not quite the size of moose as the Northwestern outfitters could have but a good outfit to hunt with.
Ron Spomer is a complete ass clown and would not take anything he says at face value.
If you don't believe me .......let me tell you a story!

I do know Darcy and his wife at Scoop Lake...very nice people.....just have wondered if they can produce moose in the 55+" range fairly often....I will ask them when I see them this winter at the shows.

Ah, another magazine writer makes famous!! Tell us another story...

Cheers,

I am going to tell a little story on my self...partially to explain why I asked this question!!

Back in the late 80's early 90's I bought a cancellation auction Moose hunt from a local SCI Chapter. Northern BC with well known outfitter for Stone sheep, etc.
Went on the hunt in late August, met another hunter on the flight up to Ft. Nelson.
We flew into the back country with the outfitter in his Beaver, I won't mention the Mt. range which would expose the outfitter, and promptly went out for a hunt in the afternoon with two local native guides. They did a phenomenal calling job and brought a big bull right to us, ie 80 yards from a mile away, we watched all the way.
My new friend was shooting an old 86 Win 45-70 and didn't think he could take the shot....I wasn't interested-first day, and the guides couldn't judge the trophy.....the new friend asked to borrow my rifle and proceeded to wound the beast! They looked for it for two days and he lost that time hunting.....
The outfitter flew me into a little lake with a VERY young guide...two days of food and said he would be back...have a good hunt!!
We went out the first day and spotted some tremendous bulls...across the river and 600-1000 yards away...the guide said..."can you take em!!" Ha, no chance...but those bulls are still emblazoned in my brain....huge white paddles in the sun!!
That was the last of the decent weather....it stormed and blew 50-75kts for 5 days, we couldn't even get out of camp....and got no sleep and yes, ran out of food!!
We were close enough to main camp we could hear the Beaver crank up in the early morning...but the guide would NOT take a chance to hike back to main camp!!...our lake was in a box canyon and the wind was whistling through constantly...
Never saw another moose after the storm...finally I put out the aviators distress signal with sticks and logs on the beach so the outfitter would notice it and come in to get us. He did at the end of the fifth day....needless to say I was furious and verbally gave him both barrels!!
We flew 5 minutes back to main camp, had dinner and went to bed to rest up.....thankful for food and a good nights sleep....
He didn't bother to hunt me on the 6th or 7th departure day, did a mountain hike with a sheep hunter looking for wolves...flew out the next day....mooseless and very disgusted, only visions of these huge beasts!!
My new friend didn't get another chance at a moose and did NOT get his desired Grizzly.......
The outfitter was very non-chaulaunt...had a couple of beers with the clients leaving at the airport.....and the last we saw was his Beaver headed back for camp!!
10 days later my friend's moose was spotted from the air and rack recovered...53" and it did make B&C...a pick up, but still a nice wall hanger!!
I got my auction money back... and a lesson that you GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!
Well, that was my Northern BC "experience" and that's why I am being so careful about another adventure.
Interestingly, this outfitter has NOT shown up in this thread!! Thanks for your input and guidance.
Cheers,

470EDDY

You always get what you pay for. Get with an agent that works Canada and do a bunch of reference check. Doug McMann has good advice so listen to the guys that live and work there.

There is no such thing as a "cheap" hunt for anything of quality. You already know this.

In the end, our time is more valuable than the money, so I work hard to waste anytime with outfits that do not have the animals or the guides.
