Gents,

I am putting this post in the CDN section as I am interested in anyone's experience with travelling to RSA from Canada, especially via Frankfurt. Does anyone have any suggestions/experience with firearms thru FRA? As well any suggestions/tips/approximate cost on taxidermy will be greatly appreciated.

Thx

If you lay over in Frankfurt as I did. Your rifle must be checked in a bonded storage $35 bucks.

If you make connections then your gun would be checked through to the flight to jo-burg with Ai Africa. Do not fly to London you not allowed to bring a gun there.

In Africa you have to register your rifle at the airport and get a permit. No problems. If you fly from there to some where your rifle is tranported by the porter to the check in and put on the domestic flight.

Things are not fast pay a good tip aand thing move faster. Other wise you mat miss your flight.

Yo, J !

You'll love Africa ! I try to get over there every year and always go through Frankfurt. I'm from Lethbridge so if you have any questions that I might help you with - drop me a line and I'll do my best. I'll be back in Namibia for most of the summer ... if the darn creeks don't rise...

Scruffy and Zermel,

I'm booked for Namibia in Aug. 2008.

I'd be interested in who you booked your airfare through, and approximate rates.

Also, Zermel, how long did you lay over in Frankfurt? I'd love to spend a couple days there on either end of the trip to Namibia, if I could. It's a long trip, and it would be good for my wife and kids to have some down time. Can you put the rifles in bonded storage for a couple of days??

Wannabe.
I Stayed over in Germany for three weeks and traveled all over Germany by car. The bonded storage of the rifle maybe less if you only stay over for a couple of days. You can not remove the rifles from the airport security area.

Make sure you tell the air line to unload your rifles and suit cases in Frankfurt for you to pick up. Your Luggage and rifle needs to be checked in again when you leave Frankfurt.

Your rifle is taken out of bond and taking to your air Canada flight by the security people.

It is a bit of a pain if you dont speak German but not a big problem.

There is some nice country around Frankfurt.
Mainz and Rüdesheim on the Rhine, is not very far for some wine tasting. A bus trip or the railway is best.

A travel agent told me this week that Iceland Air is coming back to Halifax and can connect to Europe through Reykjavik avoiding London. Check with your travel agent, also don't know about gun laws in Iceland.

I've always travelled Calgary/Frankfurt (hung around that nasty airport for about 12 hours..) then overnighted to Joeys ... hung around Johannesburg airport for a few hours then did the two hour hop over to Windhoek. A couple of times I told my travel agent that I wanted to fly Frankfurt to Windhoek but she could never get the wholesale tickets on that route .. Or at least that is what she told me. I think the total airfare was about $3,400 ... I got sick this past August and only made it to Frankfurt and then returned .. pretty darn expensive one hour visit to a boring airport in Germany ... Yeah, airfare is going to be a killer - me, my wife and 2 step-kids. Eeker Probably 70% of the trip is just airfare!!!
