I just applied for my export permit for an upcoming Alaska hunt .. and after the lady from Ottawa told me that I needed : 1. Cover letter 2. Letter of Invitation 3. Itinerary 4. Airplane tickets ... and I had told her that I would send her copy of contract and copy of my airplane ticket .. and had just typed up the cover letter explaining who I be and why I was heading off to Alaska .. beloved 8 Mag in hand (so to speak) ... the phone rang and it was another dude from Ottawa telling me to disregard that lady's instructions ... One does not need an export permit to go to the U.S. to hunt .. it was for places like South Africa (his example) .. For what is is worth .. I have never ever had customs in Canada ask to see my export permit when I returned from Africa ... but I suppose it will happen next time .. or not .. ??? Enjoy your safari, Sid. I know that you will ...

Be sure to get your temporary export permit signed by a Custom's agent upon your return. You need to send a copy of this sign off back to the Feds. It's specified on your export permit.
I've been in and out of the US with gun a few times (by car) and never was asked for an export license either.
That said, can someone explain to me the use of this paperwork, other than to aggrevate me? (I get wound up just thinking about it and I'm not even travelling with gun this year). What business is it of Canadian customs where I travel with my rifle? Upon return, if they are curious, they can check my registration and my PAL and see that I was licensed before I left and the rifle was registered to me as well, so I'm not smuggling in another one, or am not trying to dodge paying GST or whatever other thing it is they care about.
That was pretty much the Custom officer's comments when we returned from Namibia as well. He never even looked at our guns, just signed the export papers.
I've yet to ever hear of anyone being asked for it and I've never bothered when travelling to the U.S. but figured we should when going abroad. Other than killing a bunch of trees, I can't see any need for this redundant paperwork either. Your registration certificate should suffice.
Frans, You don't need the temp export permit to go to the US. Just every other country. FWIW, when I came back through Toronto last week it was the first thing I was asked for by the customs agent and after checking it he then checked my reg cert and then my PAL. Then he stamped and signed as the applicant on the permit even though my signature was already present. Guess reading and comprehension is not their strong suit.
Also you don't have to have it signed by a customs agent: "To be completed by Canada Border Services Agaent or by an Authorized Fireamrs Verifier"
If you have that much to fight for, then you should be fighting. The sentiment that modern day ordinary Canadians do not need firearms for protection is pleasant but unrealistic. To discourage responsible deserving Canadians from possessing firearms for lawful self-defence and other legitimate purposes is to risk sacrificing them at the altar of political correctness."

Anyone can get a verifyer. All you need is access to a phone "verification will now be done over the telephone by employees of the Firearms Program"

I going to have to as the customs guy managed to sign over my signture and didn't sign the correct page on the permit. I have done the over the phone verification when I bought a gun off of one the memebers on AR. Real PITA as you then have to phone back to get the registration cert sent.

Ya, I've done the over the phone verication on purchases many times but I was told it did not apply to export permits and that a physical inspection was required. This is not verication of a firearm but verification that you returned to Canada with it. Best advice is still to get it signed by a Customs' agent.
