I havent' done it but a friend was able to watch the locals do it. I think you'll get first shot and then all hell breaks loose as they need to kill it fast before it sinks.

Walrus is on my list of dream hunts along with muskox. Not so much for the hunting as the experience.

i've not done it, but i have been around watching it done. you're in a boat bodding around and try to #1 sneak up on the animals when they are on the island beach. being very alert this doesn't work very well, #2 you try for a head shot at close range from the boat and then harpoon the bull. prepare to be wet & cold

I haven't hunted a walrus but I've paddled in amongst them a bit. A walrus swimming after your kayak sure gets your attention and most Arctic paddlers spend far more time worrying about walrus than polar bears. I have followed a wounded cape buff and would far rather do that again than deal with a wounded walrus on the end of a harpoon while sitting in a small boat in the Arctic. A walrus hunt would have to be considered a big time adventure. Anchoring the animal with the first shot will be critical.

Please keep us up to date on who you hunt with and how it goes. I'm getting the urge to try it myself.

Meathead - I too have NOT hunted the Walrus, but I have hunted Polar Bear out of Hall Beach, Nunavut. Is that where you are looking to hunt from? I talked to Ike, the outfitter/guide about it quite a bit, and tried to talk him into taking me when I was there in May, but the ice conditions were too treacherous at the time. I was pleased with their efforts, thought they ran a good hunt, and killed a huge bear on day 1 of the hunt. I too think the walrus hunt would be a great experience, so let us know how it goes.

I think a walrus skull with the tusks is one of the most beautiful trophies to hang on the wall. There's no other way to describe it than "cool." And how many people can say they hunted walrus? Please let us know how it goes.
