Lots of us on here trap and fur is not a real problem to get at all. Having said that odds are it is going to have to be tanned to send it with less permit hassles to Norway. Costs for tanning are steep, plus hide values and shipping. Won't be cheap.

As an example........ a decent coyote for an average of say $100 CDN a piece, then tanning at about $75 each, taxes. You will be into it for about $200 CDN each. Takes a bunch of coyotes to make one coat. Plus shipping and any permits.

I would expect you could buy furs in Norway for less money in the long run?

Well, a fur coat here is, well expensive.
Ok, fur is fur, but I like, if I can, to get one in Wolf or coyote.
All up to now, permits was ok....But, today I did learn that thinks may change.
You do get one, but it will cost more.
(If you do come home with one, ready made, that is another story.....Maybe I better wait and get myself one when we go se some family these summer.)

Recently bought my wife a natural fox coat from a quality retailer for $1000, to give some comparison. Where are prices in Norway?

Oh, prices here, for a new coat made of fox, good quality, you have to pay around $8000,-

Yikes, that is a bit on the steamy side. Used fur coats over here go for peanuts, especially the "fun furs"...... as in fox, raccoon, coyote.

My wife bought one last year at an estate sale. Beautiful fox coat that had hardly been worn, got it for $400.

We trap a fair amount of stuff every year and you simply cannot take your own fur, get it tanned and turned into a coat for anywhere near the price of a commercially produced fur coat. heck the last big fisher I got tanned cost me $80 to have tanned. Ridiculous.

I like trapping coyotes, marten and fisher mostly but I've got to tell you you're on the wrong track. Get on eBay and look around. Compared to the prices you expect at home, something lightly used in Canada or the U.S. is going to seem practically free.

Fur is a luxury item, like diamonds. Much like diamonds, their value is linked to the fickle nature of women. It's expensive because they want it, and they want it because it's expensive. Bit of a chicken and the egg thing going on there. Disrupt the cycle by introducing some used goods into the equation and the system falls apart. A woman can't show that she is cherished by a indulgent man of substance if her coat was bought used for a few hundred bucks, so now she doesn't want it at all. It's hard to give it away, because the women will now be self conscience and worried about whether the other women will think they are pretending to be rich and horrified that someone might comment that it was used. Diamonds are just as bad without the redeeming quality of being warm. Used they might bring a dime on a dollar, if s buyer came be found at all.

Hopefully people in Norway (or at least your wife) have more sense than that, but I doubt it. If they do, might I suggest importing premium used furs full time?

Oh man.......... so now I don't cherish my wife. Hope she doesn't read this and figure it out. Next thing you know I'll be accused of liking Barnes TSX or some other oddity.

.............. too bad it doesn't work that way for gold and precious gems. They are strange and expensive pets for the most part. Thankfully my bride isn't "normal". She traps and skins with me.

Back to topic. Amusingly, the best prices we got for our pelts last season were with FHA in their joint auction with Saga Furs and American Legend that was held in FINLAND.

And speaking of auctions. I see the results for their first auction of the season are up and fur prices, as expected, sucked badly. Similar or worse than last year, depending on the beast.

Looks like Western heavy coyotes are doing OK at NAFA. Martens are trying.

This brought such a smile to my lips that I let a bit of a chuckle escape. My wife asked what was funny. In a moment of foolish weakness, I read it to her!

Now, understand, my wife loves fishing...she accompanies me on a good number of hunts...she helps skin out deer and other critters that are sometimes found hanging up in our yard...she encourages my home taxidermy experiments...she loves the fact that our den is festooned with hunting trophies, many of them Euro skulls...and she loves wearing the full-length coyote coat I gave her, manufactured entirely out of coyotes shot on our own and neighbouring properties. She prides herself on not being "like most other women".

BUT...she was not happy with your assessment of the complex relationship between men, women, money and status. You, Dogleg, have been added to her list of my friends/acquaintances/internet contacts/co-workers who are persona non grata. When I, fueled by the heady cocktail of brazen stupidity and mischievousness I was enjoying, innocently asked "Is it because you know he's right?"...well, let's just say I'm currently alone in the room.
