Anyone have an outfitter they would recommend for a Stone Sheep hunt? Looking at 2007 or 2008 for two hunters.
Thanks

Tom Vince @Turnagain Adventures. Excellent area and 100% integrity. Beat that!

Please share-I'm in the market for a Stone sheep hunt myself. I'm thinking about Scoop Lake or Heidi Gutfrucht out by the Dease Lake area.

FYI
For those of you considering Stone Mountain Safaris, Dave and Ellie Weins sold it to Leif and Larry Olsen in 2005. The main guide Ken Clarke is still with the company.

all the names mentioned are reputable outfitters up here in northern bc, Heidi has a "sleeper"area, try and gets some pics from there as some real hogs are coming out of that area, tuchodi river outfitters (larry warren) is another good one to look at as is pelly lake outfitters, the list goes on and on Stan Lancasters crew took a 43 incher two years ago, good quality rams ... for a tough hunt but gorgeous scenery check out collingwood brothers in spatsizi area of bc, good rams , fantastic country.... good luck

This is a real tough one to make a specific recommendation for...its a veritable smorgasbord of good areas and good outfitters out there.

On the Rocky Mt side of the Kechika, Drinkall's territory has always been good, and since he took GF Moore's territory over from Randy Gee it has only gotten better. Muncho Lake/Gundahoo (Art Thompson) have TONNES of sheep, and have produced a few decent ones over the last few years. Weins old territory is great, and has some of the Muskwa "heavy mass" genetics. Ross Peck's old territory (now Larry Warren) has some nice rams and quite a few sheep generally. The Prophet/Muskwa outfitters (Olmstead and Barry Tompkins) also do pretty well, and I have hear some very flattering things about Tompkins operation in particular.

On the Cassiar side, things are just as good. Darwin Cary (Scoop Lake) has GCF Dalziels old territory and the book is full of entries from there. It still produces a couple rams over 40 most years. Jerry Geraci has some nice country, and they took a 46" ram out of there not so long ago. Heidi Gutfrecht always has happy hunters submitting reports to GSCO and FNAWS. The Lancasters do well as Gatho mentions. The Kostynuks and Collingwood boys always seem to produce as well.

See, its hard to go wrong with Stone Sheep. Lots of good options, and I have undoubtedly missed a few.

The way sheep are hunted these days, the big ones are where you find 'em. Genetics wise, they are typically longer on the Cassiar side and heavier in the Muskwa, but you can get heavy and/or long sheep just about anywhere in any given year.

The country is all remote and spectacular. Its a little steeper in the Rockies but not so's it affects the hunting much.

Anyway, I know this isn't much help but unless you have some specific desires/needs, its tough to narrow it down further than that. Smiler

Cheers,
Canuck

ps: Gatho.....every time I am in that area I can't help but sing Elvis' old tune "In the Ghetto" (subsituting Gatho for Ghetto, of course). Now that fricken song pops into my head EVERY time I read one of your posts!! Smiler

My pleasure dogcat. If you have any more specific questions, or want to see some google earth images of specific territories (like I did for NimrodX on the elk outfitter thread), etc...I can try and help out. All of that country up north is unbelievably beautiful though, and most outfitters I am aware of can accomodate a variety of client needs (ie. more or less horse work, more or less hiking, cabins vs spiking out under the stars, etc).

Good luck and have fun. There isn't anything like stone sheep hunting. Big Grin

Cheers,
Canuck

Digging up an older post:

What about Yukon stone concessions such as Trophy Stone and Yukon Stone outfitters?

I had a great hunt with Larry Warren of Tuchodi River Outfitters last year. Lawson Peterson was my guide. I got a really nice 39" ram and a mature Billy Goat. Lawson was a great guide and that made the hunt that much better.

Yukon Stone has killed some phenomenal rams in the past two years.

Darwin Carey is about as good as they get in BC.
