I just put in a call to my MP, because I'd like to know, too.

The announcement on the news is that there's an amnesty for people who fail to register them. But, what if they're already registered and I want to transfer it? As the law stands, I have an obligation to call the firearms centre, but does the purchaser have to notify them? Has that changed? Do I still have to notify the firearms centre?

Do I have to confirm that their PAL is legit, or do they even have to have a PAL? What if they only have a POL, can they now buy firearms?

I'm sure all this will come out in the next while, but I hope it's at least reported in a manner that we can all understand.

Just checked the CFC site and found this:

http://www.cfc-cafc.gc.ca/notice-avis/amnesty_e.asp

Basically, what it says is that you if you have a firearm that is currently unregistered, then you can get it registered without fear of being prosecuted.

WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT?? This registry should be GONE. All this says is that "We're going to let you register your unregistered firearms without getting into trouble."

I don't want to have to register firearms any more!!! I want this fucking registry gone, and all record of the individual firearms that I already own and have registered gone with it!!! I've got a PAL that says that the gov't has checked me out and found that I'm safe to own firearms. They don't fucking well need to know exactly what firearms I own!!!!

SONOFABITCH!!! It had better get better than this!!!

The problem is the Conservatives do not have a majority government. I don't see how they can do anything much other than cut budgets etc. for the time being.

But if the do not come through with the goods and get rid of the registry they too have to go the way of the auk.

Really the only way to do it in the long run is not to vote for parties but for individual MPs who support your position and trash those who oppose you regardless of party.

We do not have to register our long rifles.
There is option, so call amnesty to register, however if we will not, there will not be farther prosecution by this government.

And, like Ted said, it all boils down to majority. We can not demand things now and loose election tomorrow. Lieberals screw us up for how many years??? 13 I guess, lets rebuild our political option and then things will change.

Greetings,

Peter

Basically, nothing has changed, in Alberta at least. You still have to follow the formalities of registration, but you don't have to worry about being prosecuted for possesion of an unregistered firearm, same as yesterday. Now, in places where the provincial government has been more enthusiastic about enforcing the law, you can stop worrying, for the next year at least.

Read what it says, guys.

"Individuals who are in possession of a non-restricted firearm and hold a possession only licence (POL) or a possession and acquisition licence (PAL) for such a firearm, but do not hold a registration certificate for that firearm;"

In the last 5 years I've had a couple of occasions where I've purchased firearms privately that were not previously registered. I called to register them and was not prosecuted. After all, their aim was to get them registered.

This "amnesty" hasn't changed a thing.

You're exactly right, Fischer. They paid us lip service, and not one thing has changed.

I do understand the problem of having a minority Govt., however - look what happened when Harper tried to install Gwyn Morgan. The bloody Libs and the NDP shot him down. According to the lefties, Morgan's admitting that the Jamaican gangs in Toronto are a problem is "not in keeping with Canadian values"!!!

As much as I hate the cost of another election, I think Harper is going to have get his ratings up and call another snap election - without a majority, we have nothing.

Something HAS changed- And it is a very important *something*

The CPC have made it OFFICIAL that owners of unregistered guns cannot be prosecuted.

Now, mostly they have been just allowing you to register the firearms as they come in, bu tthat iddn't make it legal. In fact, it set up a paper trail that PROVED that you had copmmited a crime- You were in possesion if unregistered firearms.

In western Canada, much of this registration crap has been largley ignored. But this is not the case in ALL of Canada.

The Firearms centre in some provinces have been directign police to confiscate firearms of peopel whose PAL or POL had expired.

The CPC's amnesty all of a sudden says "HANDS OFF THE LAW ABINDING GUN OWNER"

The CPC have been in power about 4 months- Fireamrms legislation was built up by previous governments over a period of years.

They are a minority- They cannot force through legislation to scrap the registry, they must do it carefully.

Patience is needed here, guys...The CPC just did fireamrs owners a favour, we shoudl be emaiing and calling the CPC and thanking them and donating money. Let them know where thier support comes from!!

Minority government, in power for ashort period- Be patient, keep supporitng them and things will get better.

unfortunately here in Norway we have had this registration for many years. you have to apply for licens for each weapon pay a fee that gets a little bit bigger every year though, for some it takes a few days to get the license for others ca 1 month. and the eu is getting a weaponwardrobe. a number for how many weapon you can have , for us its 8 now, for the swedes 6. i hoped they would stop this shit but it just goes on and on and on.

Once a registration bureaucracy is in place there is no limit to the price rises, fines, extra fees, additional permits etc. that will follow. From the moment its in place you are a puppet on a string.

Its like with cigarette and liquour taxes. The moment the government needs money they will be bumped up and the bureaucracy always wants to keep growing at your expense.

We have seen the escalation of fees in the U.S. as well. When the Federal Firearms License was instituited, it cost $1. Now it costs $200. A great deal of the rise occured under the Clinton administration, when a number of other bureaucratic administrative restrictions were added.
