Hello;
When pricing the Hunt, consider that the best hunting is in the most remote areas. Places like Alberta don't have protected territories for outfitters and you may find yourself hunting in competition with other outfitters and locals. Try going to the Alberta Professional Outfitters web site at www.apos.ab.ca . They have a free magazine they will send you, listing outfitters etc.

For a U.S. resident what would be the approximate cost of a moose hunt in Canada? I know there are many variables, but as I have never hunted moose or in Canada, I am just wondering what type of costs are involved? As a school teacher, money IS an object as well as an obstacle, and I would love any advice from those more experienced as to the best way to hold costs down and still have a reasonable chance of success.

Thanks for your serious advice on this matter.

As a US Resident you are pretty much stuck with getting an outfitted hunt, unless you know a Canadian resident that is willing to take you on a Hunter Host deal (That's what it's called in Alberta, other provinces have the same, but it is called differently).

How much money are you willing to spend? Are you prepared to hunt anywhere, or prefer East or West? Regular moose hunts in Alberta, that I would recommend anyway, run between $4500-$5500. There are cheaper hunts, but as with all things, you get what you pay for. I would hesitate to take hunts that are much cheaper...unless you know why they are so cheap. Sometimes you find an outfitter that has just purchased a tag for a new area, or an additional tag (for moose) in an area where he has only hunted elk thus far, and who is willing to let go of a trip at reduced cost, basically because it is a trial run for him. Sometimes you find cancellations, but with your teaching job it might be difficult for you to get away at the last minute.

Hope this helps a bit.

Consider Newfoundland when you're looking. (Labrador, BTW is not exactly as good for moose as the island, though has many, many more caribou.) The moose population here is very high. A number of outfitters enjoy very good success rates (in the 90%+ range). Certainly, I can say that locals with time to spend in the woods, typically get their moose. As a college prof I don't have a dedicated week of time in the fall and so I tend to hunt caribou. Caribou, if you're so inclined, are a close to 100% certainty in some areas.

Price would be in the 4-5K range for a week long hunt. Outfitters/guides are a requirement. No hosted hunts here.
