Hello everyone I have seen a number of requests for a good Moose outfitter, and thought I should write about an excellent outfitter, Stan Stevens of Mackenzie Mountain Outfitters. I decided to hunt my Dall Sheep and Mountain Caribou with him after a lot of research. He is an excellent pilot, his hunting area in the Mackenzie Mountains is extensive and he will drop you and your guide with either a float plane or a plane with balloon tires into a pre scouted area so you know that you will be close to game the next morning He will come and check on you in a couple of days and if you have not seen any trophy animals in your area he will move you to another area. I have never seen anyone so committed to having his hunters go home with the best trophy. I got my Dall Sheep on the 5th day of a 12 day hunt and got the Mountain Caribou on the 3rd day. The area was like a scene out of a National Geographic Special. I saw game every day; saw Grizzly bears, and Moose, so I booked a Moose hunt for the following year. We were dropped on a sand bar and set up camp, we would go up to a high point and glass every day, and I shot my Moose on the 3rd day of a 7 day hunt. Stan Stevens web site is http://www.mmo-stanstevens.com Regards, Aziz

I went on the Dall sheep hunt in 2004. It was everything a hunter could hope for. Stan, Helen and their sons run a Hell of a show. His piloting skills are something to see. From the look of the country, God lives right there.

There is no question that Stan or Kelly Holcomb are the guys to go with in Canada if you want to do a backpack style hunt. I know Stan does a great job!

Aziz, The Mackenzie Mtns. are incredible! I was so pleased that I left a deposit for an '07 sheep/moose hunt before I left. Who did you have for a guide? I had Scotty Boyd and he was great.

Great scenery. p.s I only see half of the pictures you post. For example I can only see the right horn of your dall sheep and there is no horizontal scrolling. I think you should resize the images a bit smaller. The price of knowledge is great but the price of ignorance is even greater.

Very nice ram. Don´t tell me the big ones were on level ground you could actually walk on. That looks like a golf course compared to what I was climbing over. My legs were ready for me to pull the trigger when the time came. If I had the money I would like to hunt with Stan every year. I suspect he will retire before I make it back.

Fixed up the photos's for you Aziz. They were justified left for some reason. Congrats on your hunt. Great photos and beautiful animals. Wayne Selby is a neat guy. Have met him a couple times...he lives in the same town as me and one of his relatives works in my office. In fact, he was even in the taxidermy shop when I brought my 46" stone in. Was neat to see his eyes bulge. Cheers, Canuck

How much did your hunts with Stan cost? That's a hunt I would love to do someday, and I hope I make it up there. I heal fast and don't scar.

Thank you Canuck. I envy all you guys who live up in Canada. Selby told me he hunts Sheep almost every year.He has a nice trophy room that he built himself. JustinLo1, I hunted with Stan about 4-5 years ago. The Sheep was $8500 and I shot the Caribou for a trophy fee of $1500. The Moose was $ 7500. His prices have gone up now. Regards Aziz

Not really, actually. The book is full of animals shot by non-resident hunters on outfitted hunts. We locals get very few. You gotta be lucky or plan real well to beat the outfitters into the best spots. I think I accomplished both in my case! The ram is the one in my signature. It was 46 x 43 green. Cheers, Canuck ps: Aziz, I forgot to mention that you got a real beaut of a dall. Love the way it curls up to the line of the nose before curling out. Congrats!

Here in Alberta we have to sit out one year, after we have killed a bighorn ram ... It's so unfair! What am I going to do with my time... Frans

We can only hunt stones every 3 years (if we are successful that is), and Dalls are on lottery (lucky to get to hunt them once a decade). You can hunt bighorns every year though...at least until our gov't tries to put them on LEH, which I hear is just around the corner. Yep, hunting bighorns out your back door is nice...hope it lasts a while yet. Cheers, Canuck

If that happens and it may well and the Aboriginal charade gives them even greater special rights to hunt and fish, then we resident hunters will be even more "out in the cold" than we now are. Wealthy foreigners will have, as they now do, greater access to B.C. wildlife than we will and that is simply not acceptable. At that time, it will be time to eliminate non-resident hunting in B.C. with some consideration for other Canadians, at least for Sheep and any other species on L.E.H. This will cause a hue and cry among the Guide-Outfitters, many of whom are mere frontmen for foreign owners of B.C. territories. That is too bloody bad, the animals belong to B.C. residents first and then to other Canadians and it is time we took better care of our wildlife heritage.

I hunted with Stan in 2001 and it was for mountain caribou,I saw big moose but to many dollars for me. At that time it was $800.00 for the flight from Yellowknife to Norman Wells and another $400.00 form Norman Wells to Stans camp. And I also had three days of bad weather in Norman Wells. I can't remenber for sure but my motel bill was over three hundred if it would of been bad a day or two longer I would have to sleep across the road along the river in my sleeping bag. I forget what the hunt cost any more, for sure its a great hunt and plenty of game as much as I would like to go back I probably never will.
