ducksterBear spray in Canada
Am I right that bear spray for self defense purposes is prohibited in Canada from the U.S.?

GatehouseIt can be purchased at any hunting or outdoors shop in Canada, but the stuff that has cfc's in it is not supposed to be brought into Canada. I think it is an enviromental/aerosol can issue, rather than a 'weapon' issue.
It's great on eggs, or as an overnight marinade for steaks!

Grizzly AdamsHello;
According to Dave Smith, whose book Bear Basics I just happen to be reading, it's one of those stupid labelling problems. American pepper spray cannot say "for use against animals", while Canadian cans may not be labeled "for personal Protection". It obviously cannot be carried in carry on baggage and you can't have it in your checked baggage either. Smith also suggests you not cary it inside small planes either, or at least put it in a secure hermetically sealed container. As for me, I wouldn't bet my life on it. Peace through superior Firepower, I say.

ducksterSo, do any of the common brands available in the U.S. fit the "non cfc" criteria?

CanuckI would suggest buying some from a local shop in Canada once you get here, and leave it behind when you go. Just about every little sporting goods store carries it. It might cost a couple more bucks, but it could be worth saving any potential hassle.
Cheers,
Canuck
Aw, don't worry about it! There ain't no barrs round here, Canuck!
