Maybe it's just me but I haven't heard squat about what's going on up there.
I had heard there were some delays a while back but nothing since.
Ya'll are still having it aren't you?

Unfortunately yes, I'm all for supporting the athletes etc. but for one small area (without snow for that matter) to benefit from all the revinue that the Olympics will bring, is rediculous for all the money the Gooberment is sinking into this farce. It's crazy the things our society wastes money on when there are so many homeless/starving children, even in Canada, let alone all the other poor countries in the world!

I for one would never want to subject myself to such overcrowding, that and having been to Hongcouver once in my life, I never need to go back. Nor would I ever want to go back, even if I did manage to get tickets for the gold medal game in men's hockey. (The only thing worth watching anyways, at least IMHO!)

The Olympics are NOT very popular with most ordinary people here in Canada and especially here in BC. They are a colossal waste of tax monies, do severe environmental damage to beautiful alpine and shoreline areas and attract hordes of foreigners to a part of Canada that already HAS too many people living here.

So, you may not experience many positive comments on them and "CoyoteKiller82" and I seem pretty typical of what most here feel about them.

They are just a "ripoff" of ordinary working people by the trendy, shallow, wealthy minority and will take us decades to pay off. Fuggem.

It's good to know that there are more people out there with my opinion. Several of the gidgets I work with either want to go or are going to "experience" this once in a lifetime opportunity. I bid them farewell as they bid farewell to copious amounts of their hard earned money wave

I'm going to benefit financially from the Olympics, and the military just spent a bunch of cash on our shooting range to upgrade it so they can use it, and our club will be left with the upgrades for a very long time, so I'm very thankful for that.

Looking forward to them being OVER, though...Smiler

Gatehouse,
That's great that you'll see an immediate impact finacially.

CoyoteK,
I for one wished I were going. Of the two, winter and summer, winter would be the one I'd like to go see. The giant downhill, the bobsledding (Jamaica Mon!), hockey, etc just seems like it would be non-stop fun.

I was in the NWT earlier this year and was surprised when I asked my guide (early 20's) what event he was looking forward to. He replied Curling.

Curling? I thought all Cans were dyed in the wool hockey fanatics. Turned out that most of the young guides in camp were more interested in curling than hockey.

Wow, times have changed.

Now that you mention it, curling is right up there with hockey....the only two sports that for me are worth watching. I think that most curling fans enjoy the olympic curling events because we're most often guaranteed to get some sort of medal. Here's hoping for double gold in men's and women's....although there is some pretty stiff competition out there for both. Should be some good action to watch on the tube.

Gatehouse, it's funny you should mention the extra $$ the military has spent on upgrades....my Dad, brother and twin sister all work on a base here in MB as civilians and the base's entire budget was gone months ago....all that's left is enough to pay their wages. My brother is a civilian plumber, who can't fix things when their broken. Other than unplugging toilets and fixing things that require no parts whatsoever, he's left to sit on his hands. I commend the military for upgrading what they did for the olympics, but it's a shame that it took a bunch of "games" for them to realise they needed to do this. Sometimes (most of the time) I wonder about our gooberment!

No, your assumption is not correct as Canada is a huge and quite diverse nation and differs greatly in interests and even politics in different regions. I hate hockey, have for many decades and find curling boring beyond words as do many other people I know.

Some sports are more popular in certain regions than others and " the Territories" tend to be more akin, culturally, to " the Prairies" where curling and hockey are far more popular than here in B.C., for example. We BC "Sidehill Gougers" tend to put skiiing at the pinnacle of sporting endeavours and "stubblejumpers" from "the Prairies" do not do a lot of "Giant Slalom"...something about "flat"........

Times have indeed changed and Canada is far different in actual daily reality than most people from other countries realize. The Olympics have little to do with "sports" and a great deal to do with international business and questionable performances in economic and ecological terms.....never again, say I.

I wish that the governments concerned had spent the monies on our military, environmental conservation and health care for Canadians. That would be of far greater use to we Canucks.

Interesting takes on sports.

I'd rather watch curling and baseball than hockey or football. As a matter of fact, I do watch curling and baseball - periodically, but never watch hockey or football. I find them boring.

I'm not on a base. They upgraded our private Rod & Gun club range so they could use it for checking their zeros and training. Our range is more set up for a handful of shooters at a time, they needed to get dozens through in a day, so they upgraded it. We are all very pleased.

Then, the athletes have the balls to take the Harper government to task for it's stand on "Climate Change". rotflmo Just think how much carbon we wouldn't have releaesed into the atmosphere, if we weren't holding them.

Well I have been watching the World Cup Slalom competition. This is amazing. These guys (and gals) wear huge pads on their arms or on the ski poles to bat the slalom poles out of the way. My suggestion is that Vancouver make this event more interesting by making the slalom poles out of angle iron, with the poles embedded in concrete. The first run will be very interesting but probably quite short as it is tough to ski with two broken hands or arms, but the remaining runs should be quite good, albeit somewhat longer in time.

WHAAAAA? Obviously you've never been to a major Canadian city before, say Toronto, or Vancouver. Heck, even hicksville Brandon Manitoba has a very diverse population due to immigrants coming to work at our local hog plant. Hondurans, Mexicans, and Chinese people to name a few.

Twenty years ago I would have agreed, but in the last couple of decades, Canada has opened the gates to all types of immigrants, and now is a substantial globally diverse country.

Follow the supplied link to figures stating the amount of work visas issue to immigrants to Canada, including an example of a couple from El Salvador, you'd be surprised at the numbers.

I have this character and a few others like him on "ignore" and suggest decent Canucks here do so, as well.

He has no knowledge of or any concern with Canada, he is merely a nasty little creep who posts false and negative crap about Canada and Britain every opportunity he gets.

He is a vulgar lttle creature and not worth a Canadian's time to debate.

We have a dj on the radio here that was talking about how to improve the tv ratings for the Olympics. The Olympics ratings have been falling for some time and so he threw it out to his audience.
Many people called in with all sorts of suggestions.
But, my favorite was a caller who suggested this: Get all of the athletes together. Then have them draw from a hat what event they'd have to perform that day.
Imagine the possibilities. That would be some serious tv ratings!

When I was a kid I used to watch the Olympics on TV. Now, after they turned "pro" at American insistence I really could not care less. The events I enjoy they don't show on TV in America because Americans are no good at them and therefore they don't merit coverage. Having said that, I am honestly not sure how well they would show on TV. International Skeet, for example, does not show very well. I don't recollect EVER seeing the Biathlon on TV.

Canadian TV broadcasts it. Usually doesn't get a premier time-slot though.

I watch biathlon here:
http://www.biathlonworld3.de/en/

I fondly remember watching the Word Cup races live on German TV though.

There is one Canadian girl (Zina Kocher) and one US fellow (Tim Burke) who are doing OK in the World Cup circuit right now. Zina came in fourth during a pursuit race a week or so ago. I doubt if that will be enough to trigger extensive coverage though, unfortunately.

On the right-handside of the page there is a link to BiathlonWorld TV, where you can watch live (but the races in Europe usually play VERY early dues to the time difference), or you can choose from past races, either highlights, or REPLAY, which gives you the whole race, without any commentary though.
