Buying a Muzleloader in the US is like picking up a pelletgun, no paperwork. Anyone ever pick one up and bring it back into canada. I know you have to register it at the Can. border but is there any laws a guy should know bout first?

If it's a flintlock, do you even have to register it at the border as a Canadian? It's my impression that period correct flintlocks don't require a PAL or long gun registration....correct?

That's right, but the one I'm looking at is a 209 inline. I just don't want to get caught in an export law I didn't know about.

I live in a border town and they have what I want 20 mins. away on the shelf, and cheaper.

You will have to purchase it, and leave it in the US until you have registerd it in Canada. Once you have the registration paperwork, you can go back and bring it into Canada. I know from personal experience that Canada Customs officers get very upset if you show up with an unregistered firearm!!!

For my biathlon rifle there was a lot more involved than just registration. There was export paperwork on their end and import paperwork on our end to be done. Of course that was not a black powder gun...

Buy it in advance......register it and no issues bringing it back. Muzzleloaders are not considered firearms in the U.S. so no export paperwork required. Some of the muzzleloaders with interchangeable barrels are subject to different regulation though.
