I am preparing to go hunting in Canada for Caribou (probably 2007).

I am looking for recommendations in the following categories:

Guide/Outfitter
Area to hunt
What extra tags to apply for
Recommended caliber of rifle
Clothing/what to bring

Any experiences you have hunting Caribou would be welcome. I know I am looking way ahead but this will be my lifetime experience and I want everything to go just right.

Need more info

Do you want to drive or fly up?
Canda or Alaska?
30-06 or 7 MM Mag is perfect
Depends when you and where you go for the clothing

We drove up to northern Quebec and had a super hunt this year. Not crazy expensive and got two trophy Bulls each.

I have chosen Canada over Alaska. That's why I am in this forum Wink

Whenever I hunt I am prepared for just about any weather but I was wondering if there were any special considerations considering the geography.

I assume the typical Caribou hunt is in the Spring?

I will be driving. I intend to take my meat home if possible (I am such a miser).

I will probably take my trusty 30/06 but if my latest project in 6.5x55 turns out really nice I might be confident enough with that by the time hunting rolls around.

Thanks for the recommendation on an outfitter. I would really like some more recommendations based on your personal experiences. I think now is the time to start talking to an outfitter and making plans.

Are you in the East or the West? I can help you with suggestions for a drive up hunt to Quebec.

Comet,

I am in the eastern end of Wyoming, a Western state that borders on the Dakotas.

Thanks for your help

Try late summer or fall. In most areas the caribou hunts are almost over by Oct. There are "meat" hunts in later fall in Quebec but not many others i am aware of .

I have hunted North Quebec many times with Club Chambeaux, these guys are the best. They fly you out of Montreal to overnight in Schefferville. Next day you go by float plane to the camp. E-Mail me at fmjrlg@ameritech.net for further info. HTH Russ Green.
