As the title says....spring black bear in NWT!! Very excited as this is my first time leaving the Northeast US for a hunt. Crazy thing is I'm leaving the NY area and have 3 major airports to get me there --- BUT the best I can do is 3 stops each way and 2 of them are Air Canada. My questions for those of you in the know are: Will Air Canada charge me to check my rifle? for each flight (2 of the connecting flights are Air Canada) whic could mean an extra $300 to and from just for the rifle. Can I mail a rifle from the US to the outfitter? I'm guessing not but figured I would ask. I also concerned about the airlines loosing or misplacing the rifle with all the connections going on. Any advice is welcomed!!!! Thanks.

I don't think that they'll charge you for each flight. The last 2 years I've flown Air Canada and had 2 connecting flights and they only charged me 50 bucks for the whole trip.

In 2008 I wasn't charged anything until my return flight. They charged me 50 bucks. In 2009 I flew from PHX to Denver to Vancouver to Prince Rupert. I was charged 50 bucks in Vancouver, and I wasn't charged anything on the return trip. A few of the legs each year were with Air Canada. Maybe I just got lucky.

Hi there I'm guessing you are meeting the outfitter in Yellowknife, NWT. I would try and get your travel routing from NY area to Toronto, then Toronto to Edmonton , Edmonton to Yellowknife. That would likely be the best connection. If the first two legs don't work, getting to Edmonton will be key, as it is the major hub in Alberta that has direct flights to Yellowknife. The baggage fee thing... you should be able to have your bags checked through to Yellowknife, whether AC would ask another airline to collect a fee on their behalf as a connecting carrier... I don't know. If you are boarding AC in Yellowknife, your bags should be checked through to final destination, and they will charge the $50 for the rifle case. If you were stopping and claiming your baggage each leg and having to recheck baggage, they'd likely try $50 per leg. Look at Air Canada's website aircanada.com and look under baggage regulations/info. Between that and your travel agent's info, you should be able to find something that works.

NY - Toronot - Edmonton - Yellowknife is the the most direct route I was able to get. Return trip is Montreal instead of Toronto.

Will definetly check out the rules n regs of AC online. Not looking forward to the 14hrs travel but hey, it is what it is. Gotta pay to play I guess.

You could also look into Westjet airlines website westjet.ca. They fly Toronto-Edmonton-Yellowknife. I also saw they have a Newark-Calgary flight, you could then go Calgary-Edmonton-Yellowknife. I have only flown Westjet once myself, without firearms, so I can't comment on how that could go. I will say the flight attendants were a cheery bunch, quite a change from what you usually get on board.

I'd only suggest using Westjet also, especially for the Edmonton-Yellowknife leg. AC is using small planes and is notorious for showing up with half the checked baggage. Our odd client that does use AC usually regrets it!!! Technically AC can charge per rifle per leg, so you never know what to expect. A stranger is a friend we haven't met

Past experience with clients you will not be charged handling fees for all legs of your journey. but you likely will at the beginning....just depends on the Air Canada checkin staff mood it seems. if your rifle case is short enough you might not be charged for over sized baggage at all. As mentioned in previous post West Jet is often cheaper & very friendly staff. West Jet did & might still allow 1 "sporting" over sized baggage for gun, ski's, fishin rod & golf clubs kinda gear. you should be able to find this info on there web pages. As for lost baggage...it happens...that is one of the reasons I request people flying on commercial airlines to arrive in Winnipeg the day before hunt commences. That way if flight's are held up or baggage is lost/delayed you have time window to receive it or purchase new gear before we take off the following day into the back country

You should look and see if you can get to Calgary directly. I know we have direct flights to Yellow Knife. I doubt you will have more than one "extra" fee. Also make sure you find that fish and chips place in YK to have dinner in.. Best ever! Good luck Calgary Guy

A return trip, booked from one airport to the destination then to home airport, should include any extra charges which are charged at the time of buying the ticket. It matters not how many times they move your luggage from airplane to airplane - as long as you never gain possession along the way. The easiest way to find out, is to call them. Daryl S.

Anyone know if you can get your permits/tags prior to arrival via mail or any other way but being personally present. I ask because since my flight will not arrive in Yellowknife until 10pm I would be stuck waiting until whatever time the permit issueer person opens up for business the next morning. Thanks!!!!!!!!

I checked NWT environment and Nat. resources and it states that non-residents have to buy their tags at an ENR office. No where on the site did it have an option for on-line purchasing. Check with your outfitter, perhaps he could purchase, and forms be couriered back and forth for required signatures. Or wait until 8 or 9 AM the next day.

Your outfitter can purchase your tags for you, all it takes is for him to fax you the application and for you to sign it and fax back. I've been doing this for all our clients for over 20 years. The client arrives and signs the licence, and goes hunting. Most outfitters in the NWT provide this service. It's just that, SERVICE!! A stranger is a friend we haven't met
