I had mine drilled and tapped for a red dot. One screw fits in the hole for the rear sight. The mount was for a S&W as I recollect. Peter Be without fear in the face of your enemies. Last I heard the newer guns are supposed to be drilled and tapped for a scope mount under the rear sight. I've also seen a Weaver-style rail attached directly to the heavy barrel with screws; pretty sure that was semi-custom job. It was very low profile with the optic removed.

Here is a very good Weaver style mount. I put one of these on my Ruger Blackhawk 41Mag and it is rock solid. I did the drilling and tapping myself but you might want to have it done by a professional. Go here http://www.jackweigand.com/swhpmnt.html Dennis Life member NRA
