butchloc is joshing you, John. You have to make allowances for those who think that the 1911 design is the pinnacle of pistol design and cannot possibly be improved upon or bettered. They also believe the same about the 45 ACP! It's a religious thing. I know nothing about the Ruger but I have several 40's and I love that round! Peter. Be without fear in the face of your enemies. I carried p85s and p89s on the job for 15 plus years I reaaly liked them the p89 was one of the best pistols I have carried. It always worked and never give me any trouble. I belive I put around 10000 rounds through it. I have a p90 now great pistol feeds and shoots any thing I put in it. It will shoot one ragged hole with them at 15 yards. Ruger makes good rugged guns that work well.

Peter, surely you don't consider anything besides the 1911 a serious fighting handgun do you? The only exception worth mentioning is the Glock. They make them because the little guys and women can't shoot anything besides the 9mm or 40 Short&Weak... I shot an IPSC match last week end. About half and half, 1911's like my Para-Ordnance P14 and Glocks. I did not see a rooger there. Rich

IS, as I believe I have stated before, perhaps on a different thread, if I were shooting IPSC I would shoot my customized Colt in 38 Super, or my EAA Gold (Silver?) Team in 9x21. Why, well because that is the gun the whole thing was designed for! So, if by "fighting handgun" you mean suitable for IPSC then you are correct! However, concealed carry and personal defense create a whole host of other issues like concealability, safety etc. and in those situations I have carried a revolver, a Glock, a Kimber and a S&W Shorty Forty. The latter is probably my favorite carry gun. "They make them because the little guys and women can't shoot anything besides the 9mm or 40 Short&Weak..." I assume this comment was tongue in cheek? If not, it was rather ignorant. Peter. Be without fear in the face of your enemies. Be brave and upright, that God may love thee. Speak the truth always, even if it leads to your death. IDPA has to put the .45, 1911 in a seperate class because they can't compete with the hi-cap .40's. All you have to do is look at the scores shot with both pistols. I have more 1911's than .40's but now carry a Glock 22 in .40. Police departments world wide are proving the .40 to be a reliable stopper. velocity is like a new car, always losing value. BC is like diamonds, holding value forever.

And swampshooter, I think that is the crux of the problem. The magazine capacity advantage of the 40 over the 45 will always be decisive in any situation where many rounds are fired. Now, one could argue that IDPA is going the way of IPSC and that neither provide a realistic self defense scenario, but, you only have to read the threads about "how many spare magazine do you carry" to understand that this issue is on many people's minds. Having said that, it could be said that the competitive disciplines are to measure "pistol craft". My Glock 22 is a pretty awesome self defense gun. Peter.
