Shot my friends 500 Smith and Wesson with a long compensated barrel. Much easier to shoot than his 454 Casull Alaskan. Be a little hard to conceal though lol. Nice gun

Same here.

My friend's 4" 500 S&W is gentler to shoot than my 7.5" Super Redhawk .454 Casull. I cannot figure out why. It is hard to believe that the compensator makes that much difference.

My Freedom Arms .454 Casull (4 5/8 barrel with the 4-port magnaporting) is even more brutal than my SRH. But then it has rosewood grips, not padded rubber.

I would love to find out why.

I've only had my S&W 500 for about 1 1/2 months. I have the 8 3/8" barrel. In the last two weeks I've put about 200 rounds through it. Mid level loads. My hand is bruised and swollen. But I still want to shoot this gun! Its awesome. This round will completely penetrate a 16" wheel sitting flat! A little Advil and a padded glove, and I'll be out there again next Saturday.Smiler

All sounds like fun to me!!

500 S&W and 454 Casull are not pistols however, they are revolvers.

pistol, revolver, often misused words----they are not interchangeable!!

I dunno.

Sam Colt called his creations pistols.

Now, wasn't HE a pistol?

Of course, that was before cartridges were invented (much less autoloaders) were invented.

It doesn't. The weight of the gun, the distribution of the weight, the ergonomics and type of grip make a bigger difference. The new sorbothane grips make the biggest difference in perceived recoil. Much so that 44mag shooters are swapping out their grips for them.
I put a set of Herretts Jordan Troopers on one of my 500's and it's even better to shoot even though they are wood. The grips are made for my hand and they change the axis of my grip.

I have a 50AE and my 44 mag hits harder. My wife prefers the 50 over the 44 mag.

I shoot a 4in 500 and a 6.5in 500 and 460 and also noticed the Ruger 454 kicked worse than just about any other handgun I ever shot except a S&W 329 .44 mag.

My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

A real sharp pain in the hand comes from the Fredom Arms Model 83 limited edition US Marshal. A 3inch barrel 4 shot chambered in .454Casull. I have fired 4 shots. Each succeding shot was tenfold worse than the previous.
