FWIW, in a 5" barrel, to meet Colorado hunting requirements, the 200XTP @ 1195fps (hot, but not pushing the limits) seems likes the best candidate to get the required 550ft# @ 50yrds. To hunt in WY (where I hunt Pronghorn), the 200XTP must get 1215fps (this is going to be max or very close to it) to get the required 500ft# @ 100yrds. The 180's lose too much energy to meet the requirements without loading to unsafe pressures. From the reading I have done and the ammo manufacturers I have talked to, the only two powders I know of that will deliver 1215fps is Alliant Power Pistol and maybe AA#9. It seems that many primers though not fired over 37,500psi will pierce giving false overpressure signs. Apparently Fed150's are up to the task, but I will still try the Wins first since I already have them.

Both are excellent for SD, but the 10 has the edge if you want to use one gun for SD and hunting.

Each person has their favorite and can argue about the merits of the particular caliber they prefer.I prefer +P 45 acp in my Sig Sauer P220 loaded with Speer 200gr Flying Dixie Cups(no longer produced)a very effective SD round. No auto for hunting give me a wheelgun in 41mag or 45lc since I can't handle the punishing dished out by Ruger SRH's in 454casull , 480 and want nothing to do with the 475,500 or S&W 460 in a handgun configuration.

I have several .45's and two 10mm's. The Glock 29 usually rides my hip in the city or the country. Those DoubleTap ballistics are smokin!

FWIW, I posted this also on another discussion. With DoubleTap I got 1275fpsmv w/180XTP(DT advertised 1350fps) and 1261fpsmv w/180GD (DT advertised 1300fps). I also tried TexasAmmo 200XTP that they advertised @ 1250fps and got 1189fpsmv. All were shot from my 1006 that has a 5" barrel and a 22# spring. Could be I have a slow gun, but I did get 1175fps from Hornady's 180XTP load that they advertised at 1180fps. Nonetheless, quite powerful from a service sized pistol.

FWIW, I just placed an order for a Variety Pack of 500rds. from them. I have an Oehler 35P and will give you guys the velocities from my Glocks when the ammo arrives.

I think you need to work on your reading comprehension, frankly it sucks.
I said many factory 41Mag loads are more powerful than 44Mag loads, and if you actually bothered to read published specs from the makers of that ammo you'd already know that and wouldn't NEED me to tell you this...

The original loading of the 10mm are far in excess to the 357Mag, and closely approach some 41mag loads and come within a wisker of some major manufacturer 44mag loads.

Even the current weaker 10mm loads are still superior to 357loadings.

I never suggested that anyone here was a wannabee, what I suggested and you'd be a complete fool to disagree is that MANY
44Mag owners ARE wannabees and the ammo manufacturers cater to them more than they cater to YOU, because the unwashed masses of wannabees greatly outnumber the serious 44Mag owners by a HUGE margin.

read the published specs from Fedremchester...

the simple fact about the 41mag Vs the 44Mag is that there simply isn't any marked for softer 41mag loads because there simply aren't that many 41's out there...

Where do I get my 10mm ammo? I have a hoard
of the original Norma loadings and some nearly as old Hornady ammo.

Where do I buy 10mm ammo now?
Anywhere I can find some old stock ammunition
loaded to the original specifications.
But I'll buy the "toothless" ammo when I find it too, because I can frequently find ammo at gunshows at prices competetive with virgin brass...

My only complaint with the 10mm as a HUNTING caliber for larger harder targets is that there is a lack of softpoint projectiles that would split the difference between the FMJ and the Self-Defense Super-Hollowpoints.

What I actually have the most of in ammo for the 10mm is the PMC produced ammo with the "Eldorado" bullets, but I have several boxes of the infamous (discontinued/recalled) Winchester BlackTalon ammo.

as for legal hunting calibers? in most states where semi-auto pistols are legal hunting arms 45ACP, 40S&W and 9mm are specifically excluded.
10mm auto is classed with the 41Mag and 44Mag and is usually specifically included.

Of course the only two states I've actually closely examined for semi-auto pistol hunting are Oklahoma and Alabama (where friends or relatives live)

But I'd love to have a 200gr softpoint available to handloading for hunting

Looks like the 200XTP is maxed out with 12.5gr AA#9 and Fed150 primers for 1192fps mv which barely meets CO hunting requirements. Compared to other reported velocities my gun is a bit slow. The 800x proved to be about 60fps slower and a bit finicky at max charges. May try power pistol later, but don't think it will outperform the AA#9.

Just realized that my chrony battery may have needed changing, possible causing me to abandon 800x too soon when I detected very erratic velocity changes. I had read an article on 10mm/800x that featured 180 jacketed bullets and if I recall correctly they pushed 1gr+ over IMR's data. I use PR measurements, velocity change, and visual inspection to determine where I am w/pressure and when a load is becoming unstable. I have determined that .4281" (determined from DoubleTap180GD=34,900psi, TexasAmmo 200XTP, and my 200XTP/12.5grAA#9=37,000psi loads) in my 1006 is the max PR that I am comfortable with. IMR max load data is 7.8gr200XTP=32,500psi(low psi for a max????). I have fired 8.8gr of 800x @ 1130fps and been shy of my max PR. Does anyone have experience with 800x/200XTP's in the 10mm and/or can calc with quickload when I will be at 37,500psi max(800x/NewStarlineBrass/Fed150/200XTP's)?

Thanks,
Deke.
