They are built on the "K" frame. The model 66 is a stainless steel model 19.

The K frame 357s were originally designed for 10 % full loads and 90 % 38 special loads !!When cops started to use 100 % full loads the guns had problems .Because of this they developed the "L " frame. Originally the 357 was on the "N" frame [M27 and M28 ].

I worked in two States for two different departments during the 80's and we only requalified with .38 swc loads. There was little training. Then the semiauto pistols took over and we started to actually give people ammo and training to go with it.

But S&W did come up with a great campaign to sell everyone new revolvers by touting the strength of the "L" frame. Smiler What the "L" framed guns did really well was copy the Smythons and Cougars that the custom gunsmiths were building during that time period.
