I am in the market for a 40 SW. I have a pant load of lead bullets and intend to use this for plinking. I have a Glock 19 and like it fine but have heard that lead is not good in a Glock, so am not considering the 23. Have shot a friend's P94Rugerand that is OK. Have seen the SR40, and S&W SD 40 and etc, etc, etc.

Don't know what I should buy.

I love shooting my SW 1911. It is 5" and like the standard barrel length. I don't think I need a compact as I don't conceal. If I did, I would more than likely carry my 1911 as I am so comfortable with it.

Knowing this, any suggestions?

Hmmm. Doesn't sound like you have narrowed down your options much yet. Are you just looking for a 40 to shoot lead out of? Personally I would just shoot them out of the Glock, keep the pressure low and clean regularly.

Otherwise there are just too many options out there. You could even get a 1911 if you wanted. I have a STI in 40 and it's awesome.

Don't believe all you hear and read about lead bullets in Glocks on the net. They shoot lead safely. If you like Glock pistols, don't let the rumors discourage you. I just don't understand the need for a .40 when you have a .45 ACP or even if you don't ;o)

I am going to buy the 40 because I have so many components for the cartridges. If you shoot enough , doesn't take long for the ammo to cost more than the gun. I find more brass laying around for the 40 than any other. I can basically shoot one for the price of primers and powder.

Who are you really? thought everyone on this forum would understand why I want another gun.

Hell, even my wife gets that one

There are after market barrels for the Glock that work just fine. I have several 40's: Glock, S&W Sigma and a CZ 85(?)(no longer made). The CZ is a full size gun but built like a tank (all steel). The 40 is a great caliber.

If you like to tinker buy a glock 20 in 10mm. It'll work fine with a 40 barrel & even a 357 sig barrel(aftermarket).

If you run out of 40 ammo, buy a glock 21 top and shoot 45 out of it.

It works. I've done it. no smithing reqired.

While I do like my Glock, my 40 is a CZ compact. It just seems to fit the hand better. Mine is an uncataloged CZ85 Compact. Today I would go for a CZ compact any day.

Thanks to all. Will consider the Glock now that have done more reasearch. Looks like you can get drop in, match grade barrels for a hunski.

We shall see

Since you said you like 1911's... There are also a bunch of 1911 style guns that shoot .40SW also.

Higher end would be the STI 2011 style guns- these are high capacity guns that are typically used for USPSA type shooting.

There are also some folks who make a .40 1911 single stack gun as well.

The cheapest solution would be a Para Ordnance P16-40 which has a pretty fat grip, but its heavy and a joy to shoot.

Look at them at a store and see if you can hold it OK- and go from there.

Rich, I believe they are using two frame sizes still, I could be wrong. They are also the original Sabatti muzzle grinding regulators.
The CZ would be a better option on that platform I think. The EAA guns seem to run these days, but the company leaves a bad taste in my mouth...

I've got a couple of Sig 40's and love both of them, extremely accurate but a little spendy.

There is a Sig 40 model SP2022 that has a polymer frame that is on sale now and then at LGS's and it would be one to look at. Runs around 450-550 depends on the store.

I really enjoy the 1911 in .40 S&W and have a few pistols chambered as such. My latest is the NightHawk Custom and I assure you... it is a joy to shoot. Although a bit pricey it is worth every penny.

Consider a Springfield XDM with the convertible magazine/grip. Its a lot of gun for the money. My local dealer has a used two tone Beretta 40 that is a big pistol but feels nice. If you're interested his # is 412 264 4867.

I too recommend a 1911 in 40 cal.

It uses the same holsters, and the same magazine carriers, and most of all, shoots and works the same as the 1911 you now have...
