Just traded into a S&W model 27. Is there any way to determine the age of the gun?

Open the cylinder and see what model it is. Should be stamped 27- ? . Tell us the model and the serial number and someone will come back with the year of manufacture.

Yes. I used to know exactly how to do this but a long time away from pistol shooting so here goes. Check to see if inside the crane a Model Number. If there isn't then it pre-dates when S & W assigned model numbers. If there is check if it is 27-1 or 27-2 again that will give an idea as will barrel length as some were discontinued at various dates. Also see if there a other numbers that are neither serial number nor model number. These are assembly numbers and again were discontinued after a certain year. Next check if barrel is pinned and if rear of cylinder is recessed. Also if diamond shape in the checkering around the grip screw. Also how many visible screws in the sideplate? Three or four? Is there a visible screw under the frame in front of the triggerguard. As I say I used to know when all these changes took place but I've forgotten it all! But if you post the answers then it will help others date it for you. Or just pay S & W for a factory letter!
