I walked into a gun show last week and met a fellow selling a Sig P226 mfg. in W Germany in 1989. It has night sights, Hogue rubber grips and came with one 15 round mag. The guy said he bought it in Georgia in a private sale. I'm guessing its a police trade in. I figured I couldn't get hurt for $425. Does anyone have any experience with these mags? http://www.topgunsupply.com/SIG-P226-9mm-20RD-magazine-SCT-pr-1270.html What brand of ammo do you use for self defense?

IMO, for self defense I pay the extra for the factory mags. I know they were made for the gun by the manufacturer. I prefer name brand ammo for self defense such as Federal. The hydrashocks are a good bullet but pricey.

The magazines SIG supplies are absolutely awsome even though they're actually made by a couple of different companies. FWIW there were some 20 round mags supplied by SIG that stuck out of the butt of the gun about 2". I was issued a couple for warrant service, drug raids, or just burying the guy next to you in brass during requalification. But that was long ago... I wish I had bought that pistol when we surplused them off for just under $300. You got a good deal on a great gun! Get some SIG magazines, fill them with CCI Gold Dots and you're a well armed man.

I purchased two mags from TGS. The mags are made by MEC-GAR and with the Plus 2 base pad hold 20 rounds. Function is flawless.

I have bought several Sig factory mags from Topgun, very good folks to deal with and very fast delivery. C.G.B.

Mec-Car is a reliable mag. They sub-contract mags for some standard manufactures. I'm sure North American Arms uses Mec-Car mags. I think maybe Kahr uses them. At any rate, they're quality stuff -- not cheapo after-market. Defense ammo -- Stick with the "Big Five" Federal Winchester Peters Remington CCI -- Not in any particular order. I really like the Remington JHP bullet. I've used 185 gr. and 240 gr. in a 45 ACP -- both factory loads and using the bullet in reloads. Remington sells a box of 100 rds, 240 gr. JHP for the 45 ACP, at a decent price. I think about $30. That's enough ammo to ensure it feeds and shoots, some for practice, and then a supply to carry. I plunk down $$$ for 20 rds of Federal Hydra-Shok for 9mm and never think twice about it. I know it feeds, shoots. I buy a box of 20 every three, four years. Nowhere near the cost of gas! Buy the bulk, surplus ammo for the range. Use the defense stuff for carry -- You don't shoot a lot of defense ammo, and it's like "insurance."

You sound like me, but I choose CorBon. I've never had a malfunction from SA.45 or DAO.40 (even during off-hand weapon retention stance).

Your best bet is to stay away from any non-Sig manufactured magazines unless it is for range only use. I had a MecGar .45 8 round magazine that actually came apart while shooting at the range so I stay away from them. Your gun sounds like a twin to the one I was issued in the mid-80s and carried for over 10 years. I ended up buying it when the department switched from 9mm to 40 S&W for $300. I still use it for teaching at the academy. We always carried 147grain JHP Winchester Ranger ammo which is sub-sonic but the best round per FBI testing. **Take Care and Keep your powder dry!**

Cool, MecGars are great mags. Had one for my Hi-Power and no problems. I think Walther had their P99 mags made by them as well. I just bought my first Sig! Picked up a P220 Sport in 45acp. It was great deal couldn't pass it up. It has the triangular-shaped seam on the mags. They seem well made but for a 7-rounder they're pain to load (unlike 1911), maybe they'll break-in over time...
