I am looking for the BEST 1911 mechanic/smith out there. Want to have a Kimber raptor II perfectly tuned. Where should I go? Contact info too please. I use Jack Huntington at 530-268-6877. I am extremely happy with his quality and the accuracy of the 1911's that he has worked on for me _____________________________________________________ A 9mm may expand to a larger diameter, but a 45 ain't going to shrink Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing had happened. - Winston Churchill

Maddog There are several very good smith's out there who specialize in 1911's as you know. Jim Clark, Les Baer, and Dave Salyer just to name a few. They all specialize in pistols used in Bullseye competition and regularly produce pistols that shoot sub 2" 10 shot groups @ 50 yards. I have shot Clark and Salyer worked 1911's for a long time and can recommend them highly. If you are interested, I'll be glad to furnish you contact information. Phil

I disagree completely. I don't mean to demean any handgun craftsmen, but I've had a Pin Gun a Delta Elite, and a Gold Cup done in Clark's shop when Jim Sr., was alive. While his trigger jobs and trigger installations on Ruger .22 autos were superb, there are several better craftsmen and shops working on 1911 platforms. I'm not really new. I had 1,000+ posts going back to 1996, when I suddenly found myself unable to Log In, in late 2013

You'll never find a consensus as to who the "best" is, or even what goes into making the best 1911. I'd suggest you get in touch with Nighthawk Custom. Their work is outstanding, as is their customer support. For their new guns they use their own frames/slides, but they also accept custom work orders on customer-supplied 1911s (Colt, Kimber, or Springfield Armory only). You can specify exactly the work you want done, it isn't necessary to take a "package" which might have items you don't want. www.nighthawkcustom.com

I probably should have been more specific in my earlier post. Depending on what your desired endpoint is will determine what group of pistolsmiths you should use. If your goal is to make your 1911 as accurate as possible along with reliability, then a 'smith who specializes in "Bullseye" pistol work should be your man. And I stand by my earlier recommendations. If however, accuracy is not your main goal, then there are a number of 'smiths capable of producing a reliable pistol. I am not familiar with any of them since that is not where my interest lies. FWIW Phil

I agree with Dave about Nighthawks. I am a preferred dealer with Nighthawk, they are one of the best out there. I carry a Les Baer daily, and am a dealer with them also. Expensive, yes. Worth the cost, absloutly! Maddog you will end up spending as much or more tuning up your Kimber than if you you would have bought a Nighthawk, Les Baer or othe higher end 1911's in the first place. In the end you still just have an expensive Kimber.
