I just received my new Glock 17 in the mail today, and now I have to feed her. For those of you who reload this cartridge what is your powder of choice when using a 124 grain bullet?

Plenty of powders available. Just check the reloading manuals or go online. AA#7 is a good one.

Have had good loads from Bulleye and W231 and thought Alliant's PowerPistol was even better.

AA #5 is an excellent choice for service level loads.

Read what your Glock Owner's Manual says about shooting reloads.

Read up, Google "Glock kB" -- Dean Speers, reloading for Glocks.

I don't have the time nor patience to explain it all yet again.

Google "Glock" and "partially supported chamber."

Look into "metal fatigue."

-- Red Dot would be one of my LAST choices, just behind Bullseye.

Don't let the owners manual scare you away from using handloads. ALL MAUF. SAY NO TO RELOADS. Just about anything you stuff under a 124gr bullet will work. I am a fan of med. burn rate powders like Unique, WSF, Universal & AA#5. You can go just below std. vel. to +P safely & no fear of dbl. charges or missing a powder charge. If you want to shoot light loads, drop to WST or HP38/W231, even RedDot but the WST is more accurate.

OK then . . . take the barrel out of your Glock and drop a round in the chamber. Have a look at how the feed ramp cuts beyond the web of the case.

Then rattle the case in the chamber. You'll note that the brass fits loose, really loose. That's "partially supported."

The brass expands when fired. Then it's resized in reloading. This work hardens the brass.

Since the brass is not supported in the chamber on the Glock, and since the feed ramp cuts beyond the web in the brass, reloads in a Glock -- particulary 9mm and 40 Smith high pressure rounds loaded with fast burning propellant like Red Dot -- reloaded brass becomes work hardened and fails.

Typically the "Glock kB" (You should Google this.) blows the slide off the frame rails, and blows the mag out the butt of the gun. Sometimes the case failure results in splitting the receiver assembly.

Google "Glock kB" -- Dean Speer. This is pretty well documented stuff.

i use rainers and win fmj. aa#7, blue dot, powerpistol, and hs6 to name a few will get you 1250+ fps if you looking for high performance loads. blue dot burns alittle too in consistent for me so i use mostly aa7 now. i get 1250 to 1260 out of my beretta. with about 5 to 7 fps deviation most of the time. very accurate as the powder's name implies.

SO are you implying it is not safe to use handloads in a GLock? Mine has seen almost nothing but for 5Krds, from mild to wild & it is still in one piece. Not my fav. pistol, but totally safe w/ sane handloads.
FWIW, loose fitting rounds do not imply an unsupported chamber. It just means the chamber is slightly oversize, which does cause some over expansion & resizing, but as long as your loads aren't nuclear, the brass still lasts along time.

glock kb's are mostly documented with 40 cals. the case on a 9mm is alot stronger. just dont start shooting 9mm major loads then you might have a problem.

Be careful with reusing brass. Keep track of your reloaded brass, I only re-use 5 times, after that I get frequent intermittent failures (actually I begin to get them on the 3rd use, but that is good for feed drills). I don't have a glock, I don't use 9mm, and I only reload "good" brass (mine that I'm keeping track of, or other people's new ammo). I've shot G19, G21, G23, G22 -- all have preformed well with off the shelf ammo except the G21 which had a hard time with Israeli ammo. Good luck.
(btw, I hate how the weight changes on the pistol with the shooting.)
