OK, I'm retiring the 1911's as full time carry guns for a lighter 40S&W. The 3+ Lbs of steel of a loaded 45 is just getting to be a PIA so I'm switching to a Steyr M40 as an ambidextrous friendly, (I'm a lefty) safety trigger, polymer frame 2Lb carry gun. Don't ask why I didn't buy a Glock, I hate the 3/4" of mushy travel of the G's trigger. The Steyr has 1/8" of trigger travel with the tab depressed and it's set at 5 Lbs from the factory. Anyway, can anyone recommend a full time carry holster that I can also shoot in stock USPSA competition for practice? Whoa! High Five, etc. etc. Glock sux! I have a safe full of stuff I've opted NOT to carry. Owned a Glock 22 about six weeks and traded it for a Smith, K Frame snub, Mod. 66. Current carry options are: Kahr MK9 Elite -- 9mm compact, stainless, 6+1 unless you opt for the larger mag, which I use for a "backup". Uzi Jericho (Baby Eagle) Compact. 9mm Compact, High Cap mags. Night sights. Springfield "Loaded" Ultra Compact. 45 ACP, 1911A1 compact. A bit big for "carry" but works out in the field. Bomar night sights. Smith, 629 -- 44 mag. 4" bbl. Field carry gun. NAA Guardian, 32 ACP, the gun I carry when I'm not armed. It's too small! Smith, Mod. 60, stainless, .357 mag. J-Frame, 5 shot. Bobbed the hammer so I don't get stabbed in the belly, IWB. Second choice after the Kahr MK9. I have Uzi's -- Mod 45, carbine, and machine pistol. Semi-auto, they work, but not "optimal." AK-47 -- 75 rd, drum mag. Serious defense gun! Rem. Mod. 870, 12 gauge, short bbl. "riot gun." I think "defense guns" should be long guns, high capacity, seriously center fire, shotgun or assault style rifle. Figuring out carry options, how it works for you. It's all really personal. Left handed opens a whole world of issues. I keep a shotgun behind the seat in the truck, also a 30-06 bolt action Weatherby, with a scope. But that's "standard" for where I live. I can carry the Smith 629, 4" bbl. 44 mag. "open carry" locally and no one looks twice. Carry arms "open" locally is very common. | |||
