Extending the dustcover on a Commander

I see there are some Commander aficionados on this forum and I don't want them screaming rape!

But....

I was given an old Commander which has a brushed Chrome finish (we call it Armoloy in South Africa). The owner was going to surrender it to the cops because he didn't want to re-licence but I stepped in and rescued the frame and slide. The frame has been nicely worked on by a South African gunsmith (John Hall of Durban) and it has a square trigger guard, front strap checkering, ambi safety, lovely trigger etc etc. The sights, however, suck bigtime.

I own a regular Gubmint MkIV Series '70 (1981 vintage) which I use for pins and a bit of IPSC, so this Commander is a spare. I have long hankered for a 6" gun and I have acquired a 6" STI slide and Briley barrel.

However, and I was well aware of this before I bought the bits 'n' bobs, the dustcover on a Commander is a tad too short, so the question I ask is this:

How can the dustcover be extended?

Any ideas, thoughts?, anyone done it before? I don't want to weld and have to re-finish the gun.

If Chuck Norris dives into a swimming pool, he does not get wet. The swimming pool gets Chuck Norris.
