9.3x74R and 450/400 Questions
Will,
Thanks for playing along as straight man for my schtick. I'll bet you used to do slapstick in Vaudeville.
The foam wad was just dragged in as filler in my above post. We'll stop around 50Kpsi and no filler.
Why would I want to mix millimeters and inches in the same designation?
By actual spec, the 9.3x74R case length is 74.70mm/2.941".
That rounds off to 75mm.
The .395 bullet is 10.03mm.
That rounds off to 10mm.
We could call it one of these:
10.03/9.3x74R
9.3x74R/10.03
10.03x74R
10.03x75R
10x75R
We will figure out some way to mark the Ruger No.1 to reflect the metric designation as well as "400/.395 Nitro Express Aboriginally Unadulterated."
Simply "400 Nitro Express" says it all.
"
10-9.3x74R-
mm"
will fit on the current headstamps for 9.3x74R brass.
That could stand for "10mm/9.3x74R" until proper 400NE brass is available.
Or
"9.3x74R
10"
For
"9.3x74R/10mm"
Easy to fit in the existing headstamps.
Yep that will do it.
Now my head is swimming and my hands are shaking ... where is that Buffalo Trace ...

So what is the weight of this .395" diameter magic bullet and how fast would it be going at 50Kpsi?

Will,
Somewhere in this range of bullet weights and corresponding velocities, recall the previous page:

IF you use your imagination and a long enough barrel.

RIP,
To make it to the 9.3x74R energy the 410 gr. bullet would need to chug along at about 2030 fps. To get it up to 450/400 energy it would need 2125 fps. If it can't do that at some "safe" pressure it is going to be a hard sell, at least outside your own kingdom.

Had a chance to go out with a friend the other week and shoot a double. I shoot a Ruger RSM in 458 Lott. His was a W.A. Jeffrey in N.E. 450 No. 2. Made in 1908 with exposed hammers. You don't think about the hammers much until after you shoot it once.
The stock shape is more straight than pistol -- most of the recoil seems to go into the shooter's cheek bone. Made me not think my Lott was so abusive after a few shots. The owner shoots it very well, I did so-so. The 9.3 looks interesting.

Will,
I have some AccuLoad3 data predicting 2150 fps with 410-grainer from a 26" barrel, right around 50K psi.
Remember that as you neck up you increase the energy potential of the cartridge. The 9.3x74R/10.03mm will not be limited to 9.3x74R energy levels. It will easily exceed them at same pressure.
A 26"-barreled double rifle or falling block single-shot is the same length as a 22" bolt action. Handy, even if only in Kingdom 395. prof242 would be King also.

Nope. Mixing inches and millimeters is not cool.
9.3x74R/10.03mm = 9.3x74R/10 is cool for easy headstamp conversion.
Thanks, Will.

Then how about
9.3/10mmX74R, or
.366/.395X74R?
It's your baby name it what ever you want!

GanyanaOr Just go to the .400 tembo (rimmed) aka a 450/400 case necked down to use .400 bulets and loaded to modern pressures. ie 350grn TSX or Banded solid at 2400fps. Nicely splits the difference between the .375 and the .416.
The only one I tried was built on a chapuis action, but oh boy, beautifully balanced. handeled like a 9,3.

Ganyana,
Hooray for the 400 Tembo Rimmed and Rimless!
If the bullets are true .400" diameter and are commercially available, then I have a ready supply of .395 bullets for the entire .395 family!!!
If they are Barnes TSX 350-grainers then they will be about .399" and I can easily size them down to .395".
Woodleigh would be great too!
Please tell me where I can find some 400 Tembo component bullets. Thanks!!!

Randy Brooks makes both350grn TSX's and Banded solids for the Tembo line. Cartridge was designed to make use of 180 and 200grn .401 pistol bullets for practice and light planes game. Have handeled and shot both the original Tembo and the rimmed version.( there is also a short version designed to fit a standard Mauser magazine box without alteration) Most of the rifles are built by Evolution arms who also supply dies etc. contact Edd on Evolution USA [evorifles@wildblue.net]
But Ripper, if you abandon the 9.3x74R case, there goes the skinny and lightweight double rifle (ala a re-bored Chapuis or Merkel). Then you might as well just live with a 450/400.
I don't want to step on anybody's toes or poo-poo anyone's creativity but I have always doubted the need or slightest justification for the 400 Tembo. It has nothing on any available 416 and is almost identical to a 416 Taylor, ballistics wise. Now that the 416 Ruger is about to be given birth, there is going to be a dizzingly amount of duplication. But then that never stopped the big bore whackos.

Will,
All true, as you say.
I am stuck on the .395 and the skinny case. No changes for me. Just should be easy to size .400 Barnes bullets to .395.
Barnes used to do similar for Nickudu, Barnes .509 to .504 before Barnes was making the .505 Gibbs bullets as a standard offering.
Yes, we can easily size down .40/10mm pistol bullets for our use too.
Just WHACKO.
I'll look up Ed Wolsum.
Maybe one good Whack deserves another.
But two good Whacks do not make it less Whacko.
Thanks Ganyana.

Too true. Only reason for the Tembo is to split the difference both recoil and terminal performance wise between the .416 and .375
On a converted 9,3 chapuis chasis, an 8 1/2 lb tembo kicks about the same as my Krieghoff 500/416.
Of value in Africa (but not in the US) is the ability to shoot pistol bullets for smaller game.
of course, personally I prefer Ken Stuarts .44 Ganyana

( A shortened .404 case necked to shoot .427 soldis or softs of 425grn or any .44 mag bullet. In theory, marginally better knock down than a .416 (425 grn bullet at 2400fps, slightly greater frontal area...) but brilliant on a wide veriety of plainsgame with 240-300grn pistol bullets. A 240grn hollow point at 300ofps skins baboons as you shoot them. Same should apply to the tembo or Rips creation (if we could only settle on a name)

How about this? Neck down a 404 Jeffery to .410. You can shoot the new cheaper Hornady bullets and have a bunch of .411 to shoot as well. We could call it the 400 MOJO or the
400 IKATTW. We could get those velocities that Ray's been gett'n!

Or has someone beat me to it?
