Made it to the range today with a box of the new Hornady .500 NE DGX and DGS ammunition. Accuracy was okay, see below.

Velocities are below advertised. My Krieghoff has a 23.5" barrel. Velocities on the box are listed as 2100 fps with a 24" barrel. The DGS averaged 2055 fps, extreme spread was 21 fps. The DGX averaged 2040 fps, extreme spread was 35 fps. Recoil on the DGX was not bad at all, noticeably more with the DGS.

I think you were just getting punch drunk as the rounds continued to go off. You can tell the difference between 2055 and 2040 fps?

Come on now, Michael ..... Smiler

I will admit it was strange, but the solids really did seem to have significantly sharper recoil. I also had the .500 Jeffery out and a .404 Jeffery and the .500 NE solids were the last ones I shot, so maybe, just this once, you might be right . . . Wink

Mike:

Do you have any idea as to what ammo was used to regulate your K-gun? Does the Hornaday ammo run about the same velocity.

In my .470, I couldn't get the Hornaday DGX ammo to shoot at all. I think it was running about 100 feet to fast.

Dave, I believe that the Krieghoffs are regulated with Wolfgang Romey ammunition. It is usually pretty fast stuff.

Good to know the instrument velocities. No big surprise. At what distance were you shooting? Can't tell which were rights and which were lefts. Were they crossing? I always shoot at two dots about 20" apart from my standing supported bench. Takes the mystery out of which hole was from which barrel.

I was shooting at 25 yards. The lower shots are the right barrel and the higher shots are the left barrel. As you can see the shots with the DGX were basically horizontally aligned and not crossing. The DGS were not horizontally aligned, the left barrels are the two bullseyes. I did not shoot any at 50 yards.

Mike:

I just picked up a Blaser .470 that was regulated with WR ammo as well. The Hornday stuff just would not shoot for me. I just think it was running too fast. I had to slow it down to get it to regulate. It shoots much better if I run the 500 grain Woodleighs around 2025-2050 fps. While I have to work with this rifle a bit more to be sure, at least in the .470, I think it is shooting right in the Kynoch window.

Hey guys,

Where are you buying Hornady .500 NE ammo? I have been looking, but have not found anyone with some in stock.

VERY anxious to purchase some ASAP.

Thanks,
Leon

I got mine from Midway and Cabelas. I ordered it and just waited for it to come in and ship out.
