Heym Jumbo for 23,500 Sterling or about $39,000.
Boy I wish I found this earlier.....and the funds to purchase.
Seems like a steal.
Auction was held in England in September 2008

HEYM A FINE AND RARE .600 NITRO EXPRESS 'JUMBO' SIDELOCK EJECTOR DOUBLE RIFLE, serial no. 83035,

Description:
HEYM
A FINE AND RARE .600 NITRO EXPRESS 'JUMBO' SIDELOCK EJECTOR DOUBLE RIFLE, serial no. 83035,
23 3/4in. nitro barrels with elongated matt sight rib, gold-highlighted open sights and folding leaf sight, ramp-mounted gold bead foresight, scroll-engraved at the breech ends, the flats of the barrels marked 'MOD. 88 Elephant Stopper', treble-grip action with side-bolsters, manual safety, elongated top-strap, cocking-indicators, fences finely carved in low relief with floral and scroll engraving on a matt background, best scroll engraving surrounding finely engraved bulino style vignettes of charging bull elephant, buffalo and rhino set in savannah landscapes, signed 'M. Richter', the triggerguard with the head of a leopard and the engraved steel pistolgrip-cap with a fine portrait of a lion, matt silver finish overall, 14 7/8in. highly-figured pistolgrip stock with cheekpiece, scroll-engraved sling eye and including 1in. leather covered recoil pad, beavertail fore-end, weight 14lb.

Other Notes: The vendor informs us that the rifle is just one of four made of its type (the other three shipped directly to private collections in the U.S.A.). It has had just two sighting rounds through it which grouped within 1in, dead centre, at 50 metres.

500Grains,

Half off??? So are you saying a Heym jumbo slightly tarted up is somehow worth almost $80K. Not in my book. I think this gun actually sold for more than its worth.

BR,

I am counting the engraving. If done by the right guy, the engraving could easily have cost more than the rifle.

Here is a Heym for 78 000 USD

http://www.gunsinternational.com/detail.cfm?id=100061353&string=act=adv

I think that a Heym Jumbo 577 is starting on 34 000 USD, with the basic wood and no engraving.(600NE probably will cost more) But also on Holts Auctions you need to add 20% + vat of the price - so you need to add + 10 000 USD.

Depending on who did it (if it's done by hand) I would think that engraving alone would run $25 to $40K?

The engraving might cost alot to have done,
but for ME it raises the value less than 5%.

25K for this engraving, not in my book. 40K out of the question. Then again most who buy these types of guns never use them or are shot very very infrequently. Most look brand new as they just sit in box to be shown off to friends. For the extra 25K I would much rather take the money and buy a Demas 600 and enough components to shoot it for the rest of my life SmilerAnd have TWO rifles. The only thing better than owning one 600 is owning two Big Grin Big Grin AND using them!!! The 600 is a great caliber and a real blast to shoot. Cast bullets make the cost of ammunition almost nothing. A 800 grain large flat nose cast bullet is a real crusher.

Corbin - The HEYM pinless sidelock in 577 or 600 is $60,000 + engraving.

Michael Richter did the engraving on that particular rifle, and I would guess its cost at around 15,000 with fine scroll and 6 bullino animals.

He is among the best engravers in Germany and would probably argue that his skills and effort represented more than "slightly tarted up." Wink

I'd have to sneek up on it to shoot it.....but $39K for that rifle....somebody is a thief. That is a fine piece of iron and the engraving is beautiful. Plus...I like tarts...at least I did before I got married!

Here's some more of Richter's work on a HEYM.

This photo was taken of the auction rifle above before it was finished. I took this photo in Germany with Richter.

The last photo you posted of the rifle in the white is the same one that was auctioned (by my looks).

Kyler's post brings up a question: How can you tell if engraving is by hand or machine?

Scrollwork seems harder to tell than other types.

The simple answer is to look at it. It's obvious when the work is in hand. Sometimes with photos of poorer quality it is not so obvious.

Finally, since I kind of work with numbers all the time, the sales price of the rifle at today's exchange rate would be approximately $35,500, a real bargain, back in Sept it would have been about $42,000 depending on the rate on the date.

I think the engraving is exquisite. I collect engraved guns but that's out of my price league.
