I'm looking at working up a smokeless load for my .500/465 double. Does anyone here reload for it? Do you need I use a filler?

The load I use in my .500/.465 is: 77/78 grains IMR3031 480 grain Woodleigh F215M 2 grains poly fill Velocity is around 2075 - 2125 fps. Your mileage my vary, start low and work up. Mike

Ok, thanks for that, I've never used any filler and don't really know how to approach it, so, just two more questions; What is poly filler, and is it worthwhile/necessary for just 2 grains?

Dacron (it is pillow fill) and you can usually pick it up in a big bag that will last years at a fabric store. Yes, even 2 grains is necessary. You have to keep the powder compressed against the primer. Mike

Mine regulated great with 87.5 grs of R-15, Fed 215s and the Woodleigh 480gr soft at 2075fps. I used Kynoch foam wads as my filler. I have had different lots of R-15 perform differently so be sure to start a little low and work up. I have also had great success in 450-470 doubles with IMR4831 which doesn't need a filler but this gun preferred R-15 so I went with that. Get Graeme Wright's book, "Shooting the British Double Rifle", 3rd edition and you'll do yourself a big favor. Also be sure to use a chronograph. Keep us posted on how you do.

...ok so does the filler go on top of the powder charge? I've read about using cream of wheat as well, but it all makes me wonder if it doesn't get mixed up with the powder.

Correct, on top of the powder, tamped down on the powder then seat the bullet. It does not sound like much but you will be surprised just how much 2 grains of Dacron is. Cream of wheat is used to fire form brass. You really should get a copy of Graeme's book before embarking on reloading for a double. It would be tragic to make a mistake and either ruin a nice rifle or end up hurting yourself or someone else. Mike

Do not have a 500/465, but do reload for an H&H 500/450 which is as close as can be. Would never use filler in a vintage rifle. Instead I use IMR 4831, roughly 97 grains regulates very well at about 2025 fps. Suggest you start at about 92 grains and work up slowly... Believe other Board members will be chiming in who also use IMR 4831. Regards

I also reload for the 500/450 amongst others. Best advice is to buy Graeme Wright's book. Woodleigh bullets have just released their reloading manual. There should be some good load information in that. My copy is in the mail. Compiled by Geoff McDonald, Graeme Wright and Hans Bossert. http://www.woodleighbullets.com.au Cheers, Chris DRSS

I use backer rod as a filler and have shot hundreds of rounds with great accuracy. As Mike stated you can use poly-fill or backer rod. I have shot thousands of rounds in my schuetzen rifles with a small ball of cotton down on top of the powder with no barrel ringing or problems whatsoever. Dutch

In my limited experience, 105 to 109 grains of IMR 4831 seems fine for me. No filler used. LRM primer to ignite the powder better. (three grains less when using a solid). Both bullets used were Woodleighs. Just my 2 cents. I used 98 or 99 grains of IMR-4831 with a cork over powder wad. Velocity was 2,145 fps from my rifle. You can also use Dacron on backer rod if it is easier but start down around 92 grains if you do and work up to your desired velocity and regulation. 465H&H
