I have a shot of picking up an Sabatti or Biakal 221 in 30.06 which would be the best rifle to work with? Also is there anyone who has one in 30.06 and how to get it to shoot? I heard that the model 221 has a bad trigger and can it be fix?The last thing how far do they shoot?

I've got a baikal in 30-06...and it will shoot factory remington 180's into less than 3"at 100yds.. scoped with a redfield 3-9...triggers are terrible...that might change 1 day.. not a big concern as of now... I don't like the extractors, it's hard to grab the cases from under a scope... Good gun for what few $$$ I've got in it...

Wow! How much work did that take Jim? I was happy with the groups the M2 ball was giving me. I hated the extractors and the propensity of the action to want to close just enough to get in its own way for loading/unloading. You still planning on a 30R Blaser conversion?

After i got it home i shot some of the greek ammo i have... and it was 2" at 25, 4 at 50 and about 8-10 at 100 yds, with the redfield scope i stuck on it... thought about continuing to use the ball ammo, but unless i made a head shot, anything will run off... so last weekend i tried some of the cheap ( $21) remington factory 180's... and it settled down a lot... point of impact went nearly 4" higher and groups tightened up...a friend has some 180 speers handloaded and got nearly the same results... no telling what this thing was originally intended to shoot.... i figure the 30r blaser will cost way more than i want to spend.... the 30-06 is cheap.... i'll be in houston the weekend of the 22nd if you want to shoot it again....

I have to check my school and clinical schedule. I picked up plenty of 458WM ammo.

My Baikal has an Ultradot on it and will shoot four 220 gr Hornadys (2 from each barrel) into a 1.25 inch circle at 50 yards. Triggers were fixed by my smith for about $100 (forget the exact amount). They are both creep free and break at about 2.5 pounds. A little to light in my opinion but they have never doubled.

Do not plan on using the factory iron sights unless you plan on cutting down the comb.

I did try putting a low power variable scope on it but it threw the accuracy out of wack.

Have no knowledge of the Sabatti's so can not help you there.

Am guessing they do because I am a lefty and stock seems to fit ok other than the high comb.

Yes, the Baikal stocks are straight, with no cast. I've had a couple and thought they were good value for the money spent. Comb height was fine for me. The user-regulation system is crude but it works, and accuracy with mine was very good, both with and without scopes mounted. Inexpensive airgun scope mounts fit the Euro-style scope grooves well, and the NECG rear aperture sight intended for Ruger rifles works perfectly for those who prefer iron sights to optics. Personally, I would go with the .45-70 model, but I had good results from the .30-06 as well.

Like you and Hizzie, I hate the extractors on my Baikal -06. They stick and after a couple of rounds I have to use my Gerber tool to pull them out. Argghhh!! But, I can toss local 150g generic brand ammo into a 2" group at 100m with iron sights. So, what to do...??

I have ordered some 7x65R brass/shell holder and when it gets here am going to run a few through my RCBS rockchucker .-06 dies. If they turn out like I think they will, I'll take the gun to my local smith (mad as a box of frogs but reeeaaallly good smithy!)and have him mill a rebate for the flanged round. Then the brass should just about fly out! Besides, a real double should be flanged anyway. Yeah, I know; the gun will be unique handload only ammo, hard to re-sell, etc. I guess I could have him re-stamp the barrel with "BC7x65R/-06" or something, for the "BwanaCole Special" Big Grin

Once I get it all done, I'll post pics, etc. It will take a few weeks as I'm travelling for work quite a lot just now. Oh, and the stock could use some serious cast to the right. It is straight as an arrow and do have to mash my face into it to get a good site picture!

I have the remington 45-70 sxs for $1000 it worth the money, there are problem by design, pistol grip has a peculiar angle, the distance between the pistol grip and the triggers must have been made for an orangutang swear you need fingers 7 inches long. At break open, the action will not stay open enough to extract casings you need to grab the barrels and open it up more. Other than that mine shoots extremely well.

I have both. Whole different class of guns. I love the Sabatti, I got lucky with mine. I also really like the 221, shoots great, fun, good for beating around and great for close cover deer hunting. If I ever got to go, I wouldn't bring the 221 to Africa though! The Sabatti, in a minute.
